iBeer iconFirst off, Happy St. Patrick’s Day from O’Grady’s PowerPage!

I wasn’t quite sure how I was going to tie the holiday into a post, but then I ran across iBeer Free. I’m not sure this is the type of app that gets used on a regular basis, but it can be fun to pull out as a fun way to demonstrate how the iPhone’s accelerometer works. As you can imagine, the app turns your iThing into a virtual glass of beer, or other beverages via in-app purchases. Tilting your iPhone to your mouth as you would a glass makes the simulated beer magically drain away as if you had consumed a refreshing beverage. By default, you get to choose between four simulated types of beers and some green mouthwash, which at first I thought an odd addition, but then I realized it would be perfect for St. Paddy’s Day to give the appearance of chugging some green beer. For $0.99 you can get rid of the ads (highly recommended) which also adds coffee to your list of beverages.

iOS-vs-AndroidBefore we ring out 2013, we probably want to slip in that Apple did extremely well against Android over the holiday season. Regarding apps, it appears that the AppStore did quite a bit of business around Christmas as compared to Android. IBM’s latest Digital Analytics Benchmark Report found that purchases made from iOS devices accounted for about 23 percent of the online shopping done on Christmas Day in the U.S.

Day6ApplegiveawayThe watch for free gifts from Apple continues. For day six of its 12 Days promotion, Apple is offering one song and one video from Avicii’s New Years Eve Mix. With less than 24 hours to go until New Years, this seems like an appropriate choice. Keep watching the PowerPage as we run-down each giveaway until the last on January 6th. Maybe I’ll listen to it while I’m working NYE.

Apple-iTunes-Connect-Mobile-AppDevelopers were (probably) happy last Friday when iTunes Connect went back online. iTunes Connect is the tool that developers use to upload apps, change text and pricing, and monitor their sales in the AppStore. Back in November, Apple sent out emails to developers notifying them of the holiday downtime, affecting both Mac and iOS software.

“iTunes Connect will be temporarily unavailable from Saturday, December 21, to Friday, December 27, 2013.

During that time, iTunes Connect will not be accessible and you will not be able to submit any apps or In-App Purchases. Processing of any Newsstand Atom feeds will be delayed until after December 27. Sales and Trends reports via the Autoingestion tool will be available but may also be delayed.”

The email went on to mention several other activities that would be postponed until Dec. 27th. So, you can expect a few app updates rolling out this week.

The giveaway was kicked off the day after Christmas and, as the app’s name suggests, you’ll be able to download free things from Apple for 12 days. We have already entered day five with seven more days to go. If you are late to the party, you have missed the previous four days since the free items are only available for 24 hours.

Christmas-GiftHere’s part 2 of my Gift Guide, which may turn into that “what I get when I return my Christmas gifts for credit” list, seeing as how it’s only 6 days until Christmas. The second half includes a number of gift ideas that I’ve stolen borrowed from some other gift guides because they are really good suggestions for things I’d like to get for myself. I’ll throw in a couple more of my own at the end.

Christmas-GiftIt’s that time of year again, when everyone is scrambling to fill their gift giving list for the holidays, and for those that have tech geeks in their family or other circles, it is getting more and more difficult to find that perfect gift. Thankfully it is also the time when every magazine and blog is posting their holiday gift guides, and the PowerPage is no exception. So here then are 10 or so items that aren’t crazy expensive, culled from other gift guides or my own product wish list, that offer a nice range of items and that I wouldn’t mind seeing under the tree (if I didn’t have it already).

Walmart is selling the iPhone 5c for $27 this Friday!

iPhone-5CWalmart is cashing in on the holiday spirit and people’s desire for colorful tech. The iPhone 5C has not been a big seller for Apple, but retailers are doing what they can to bring customers onboard. The LA Times reports that Walmart is making some deals to move the 5C;

“The iPhone 5c has struggled to sell and Wal-Mart has been discounting it since it was released in September. Friday’s sale price won’t be as good at what Wal-Mart offered on Black Friday — $45 for an iPhone 5c with a $75 gift card thrown in — but you’ll be hard pressed to find the iPhone 5c for cheaper than $27.”

Walmart’s Friday sale includes other Apple products, as well as other electronic items, games, and clothing. The sale begins Friday at 8 a.m. local time. Sale prices are in effect through Dec. 24 or while supplies last.

Apple includes US in 12 Days app giveaway

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 10.36.56 AMThis is nothing new to European and Canadian iThing customers, but Apple has released the 12 Days app which offers 12 days of free downloads, including music, apps, books, movies, and more. The free items are only valid for 24 hours and some content may not be available in all areas. The promotion starts on Dec. 26th and runs until Jan. 6th and is the first time Apple has offered it to US customers. For the past three years (introduced in Dec 2010) that the holiday promotion has been going, the goodies have only been available in Europe and Canada, although it was only available in the UK the first year, adding eligible locations in Europe and Canada in 2011. According to a MacNN article from 2011, there is a history behind the 12 Days giveaway.

“[...] the countdown has its roots in Eastern Christianity, which traditionally holds the Feast of Epiphany on Jan. 6 to celebrate Jesus’ baptism.”

“Many countries outside the United States mark at least the first of the twelve nights, often called Boxing Day or St. Stephens Day. The twelfth night is also seen as the traditional day to remove the last vestiges of Christmas decorations and celebratory foods.”

There is also that 12 Days of Christmas song. This holiday promotion is the second offering from Apple this year. A few days ago we reported on the Holiday Playlist music giveaway which offered 8 free holiday songs from the iTunes Music Store. There’s no calling Apple the Grinch this year.

Could the new Mac Pro be available as early as December 16th?

macpro_background2That’s what a German retailer wants you to believe. German retailer Conrad Electronic has begun taking pre-orders for the two stock configurations of the new Mac Pro, citing availability on Monday, December 16. Where they are getting this date is a bit of a mystery since Apple generally doesn’t give its resellers that much advanced notice. So far Apple is still pointing at the vague availability of “mid December” which was announced as part of their Mavericks release event in October. (more…)
