Apple on Wednesday introduced the third generation of its iPod shuffle music player, the smallest of its iPod line and now nearly half the size of the previous generation.
According to Macworld, the new Shuffle boasts a feature called VoiceOver, which enables the uniot to speak your song titles, artists and playlist names. The shuffle can speak 14 languages including English, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.
The new unit’s controls are now located entirely on the earphone cord and allow users to play, pause, adjust volume, switch playlists and hear the name of the song and artist. The iPod can also provide information regarding battery life on the fly.
According to Apple, the third generation iPod shuffle is significantly smaller than a AA battery and holds up to 1,000 songs.
The new iPod shuffle is available in silver or black and features a built-in stainless steel clip. The unit is available immediately and retails for US$79.

DLO Action Jacket for iPod shuffle

DLO Action Jacket for iPod shuffleThe best iPod form factor for the gym is the smallest – translation: the iPod shuffle. I first resisted the iPod mini but turned into an iPod mini convert after using it at the gym. Although the iPod shuffle desperately needs a display, at only 0.8 ounce, it is perfect for the gym. My favorite case for the iPod shuffle is the Action Jacket from DLO Direct, a cool neoprene case and armband combination. The included belt clip rotates 180 degrees and a clear vinyl screen protects the iPod controls from sweat. Pick up the DLO Action Jacket for US$24.95 from everythingiPod.com.

iPod shuffleWhen it was originally announced I panned the iPod shuffle’s ugly design, which I still stand by today, but I have to admit to having a sweet spot in my heart for the shuffle despite its flaws. Read more..

REVIEW: Skin Tight Case for iPod Shuffle

Speck Products Skin Tight iPod shuffleI’m the kind of person that likes to keep my electronics in pristine condition so I usually become a little obsessed with cases. I slap a case on everything, my phone, iPod and camera. Although the iPod shuffle barely needs any protection (it’s so light that dropping it does little damage) it’s still a good idea to protect it from the wear and tear of everyday use.
That’s where the Skin Tight case for the iPod shuffle from Speck Products comes in. It provides 360 wraparound protection for the diminutive music player. The upside is that a silicone skin sticks to everything, it grips the dashboard of your car, sits nicely on the exercise bike, etc. The downside is that it sticks to everything and can be difficult to remove from your pocket, often inverting it in the process. Either way it’s a small price to pay for the protection provided and well worth the investment – especially if you’re as obsessed with your electronics as I am.
Skin Tight for the iPod shuffle is available now in clear, black and pink for US$19.95 – red, blue and green are available for pre-order and will ship on 30 March 2005.
