Apple’s iCloud Activation Lock page removed without explanation

Without hint or warning, Apple has removed the iCloud Activation Lock status page, which used to exist at iCloud.com/activationlock, but that URL now leads to a 404 error instead. The utility let anyone type in the IMEI or serial number of an iOS device to find out if Activation Lock had been turned off, something which proved to be useful to verify the authenticity of a seller when buying a used iPhone online.

References to the web page have been removed from Appleā€™s support documentation, indicating this is not a temporary issue and the page has been intentionally pulled from service.

A previous Apple support document recommended that users check the Activation Lock status of an iOS device before buying it to ensure that the product was ready to use. The text was removed on January 24th and the iCloud.com/activationlock URL stopped working not long afterwards.

Apple leads in holiday device activations, down 5 percent year over year

The Christmas gifts have been exchanged, the Chanukah ones are being given this week and it looks like Apple is leading the pack in terms of smartphone activations for the 2016 holidays.

This year, 44% of new phone and tablet activations were Apple devices with Samsung seeing 21%. While Samsung is slowly growing in popularity throughout the holiday season, up 1% from last year, Apple devices continue to be the gift to give. Holding the third and fourth positions for activations are Huawei and LG; which is remarkable, as both manufacturers do not have an individual device within the top 35 devices activated. Their high rank is likely due to the fact that they have wide variety of devices and affordable options (hundreds of phablet and medium phones) for consumers to choose from.

If you’re feeling brave, here’s the iOS 10 public beta.

After only two developer releases, Apple has released the public beta of iOS 10 into the wild for public testing.

Apple started letting the public into its iOS beta tests last year. Before iOS 9, you had to be a developer (and pay $99 for a yearly developer subscription) to test drive prerelease versions of iPhone software.

As of now, Apple has released the iOS beta to the public in order to receive feedback from regular users as opposed to strictly developers. The iOS 10 public beta will install the Feedback Assistant app on your iPhone, which you can use to send notes directly to Apple.

This is why they invented bug fixes.

Following last week’s release of iOS 9.3, a significant number of users have complained about an apparent iOS bug that causes Safari, Mail, Messages, Notes, Chrome, and select other preinstalled and third-party apps to crash or freeze after tapping or long-pressing on web links.

The issue has actually spread, with some users claiming to have encountered the bug in iOS 9.2.1 or earlier versions of the firmware. A wide range of devices appear to be affected, including the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini.
