Macworld_sessionSessions have always been a big part of any Mac Expo, but especially in recent years in response to the absence of Apple’s Steve-notes and daily product demonstrations and tutorials. While I miss the Apple presence, as a power-user I welcome the fact that the bar for session topics has been risen. Past “standard” sessions (non-IT) focused primarily on the average consumer, giving tips on using iPhoto for organizing and improving the quality of photos, using standard utilities to execute basic maintenance, or creating ringtones with GarageBand. These are all worthy topics, and the average user is an important demographic for Mac, but it was frustrating that there were few opportunities for the average power-user to learn something new or push their learning experience to the next level. While there has been some improvement, I think there could be more done for power-user education, however, that is not to say there have not been some great additions to the session agenda to improve the experience for all types of Mac users.

PP bolt logoHi PowerPage-ers! (we need a trendier name like Veronica Mars has “Marshmallows”) I know this is late notice, but if any readers are going to be at MacWorld/iWorld in San Francisco this week, I’d like to setup a brief meetup on Saturday. Post in the comments if you’ll be there and if Saturday afternoon works for you.

Thanks, and hope to see you there!

http://thescene.s3.amazonaws.com/pics/bar/2/51481/profile/1205061797294_272.jpgJoin us for a spectacular autumnal meeting on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at noon.

The Philadelphia PowerBook Users Group (PPUG) will hold its pre-holiday festival meeting from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at the beautiful Manayunk Brewing Company. We usually have lunch (and a brew) while we talk mobile computing.  We will need to leave the Brewery promptly by 3pm because another group will be using the room.  So that means we will get started promptly at noon.

I’ll be on hand with PPUG co-founders Rob Parker, Bob Snow and Youngmoo Kim to talk about latest developments in mobile computing, including new Macs, iPads, iPhones, and the latest Apple developments right up to the date of the meeting.  Topics will include new iPhones, iOS 7, Mavericks, the new iPads, and Frax, the amazing new app Kai Krause and company.

Come hear special presentations from our panel and some fabulous demos as well. Additionally, we have lots of give aways courtesy of and provided by Sandy Foderick of Apple User Group Resources. Of course we’ll have a healthy serving of Q&A.

Join us for a great meeting, it’s free and open to you and your guests. Feel free to bring items to sell or swap as well.

OUR MEETING PLACE:

Manayunk Brewing Company
4120 Main Street
Philadelphia, PA 19127

If you are part of a Mac User Group, then forward this announcement to your membership.  All are welcome!

(Thanks to everyone that attended!)
Following the annual tradition, PowerPage’s 2007 Macworld Expo class photo is a go and will happen today at 4:30 PM with the group meeting up in front of Mel’s Drive-In at Fourth and Mission (across from Jack in the Box and the uber-funky Metreon theater).

And yes, we promised free ice cream sundaes for falling prey to the anticipated Apple iPhone announcement of a few weeks back, only to discover that Linksys had released a Voice Over Internet Protocol telephone line under the same name.
Thus, you deserve a free sundae.
With your choice of toppings.

We’re having a PowerPage meetup on-site at around 1:30pm in front of the room. Heck, we may even join with our compadres from (TUAW) for a class picture or something. If you’re in the Philadelphia area, don’t miss this free chance to see a living legend speak.
