Amazon.com offers discounted MacBook Air, MacBook Pro prices for Black Friday sale

The savings have arrived.

Per AppleInsider, web retailer Amazon.com on Thursday cut pricing on Apple’s MacBook Air lineup and a handful of 13-inch MacBook Pros, yielding the best prices thus far on some models while matching pricing from rival retailers on others.

For MacBook Airs, Amazon has knocked US$100 off all models with the exception of the 1.80GHz 13″ MacBook Air, which it cut by US$174 to US$1,024.99 — the best price for this model thus far. The price cuts also yield the best deals on the 2.5GHz 13″ (4GB/500GB HDD) MacBook Pro US$1,034.99 (US$164.01 in savings) and 2.9GHz 13″ (8GB/750GB HDD) MacBook Pro US$1,349.99 (US$149.01 in savings). Both these prices will best Apple’s Black Friday sale. Amazon also pays some of the highest prices (in Amazon Gift Cards) if you sell them your old Mac (compare with other trade-in services).

So, if you don’t want to venture out there and have to use friends and relatives as shielding today, take a gander at what Amazon might have to offer.

Target, Best Buy handing out iTunes gift cards with purchase of iPod touch, iPad units

You’ve digested your turkey…now go snag those technology savings.

Per AppleInsider, discount retailer Target is giving away US$60 gift cards with each iPad with Retina display purchase, while Best Buy is offering up a US$50 gift card of its own with each new iPod touch. You can also get a US$100 iTunes Gift Card for US$80.

The retailer is giving away a $60 gift card with each iPad purchase (excluding the iPad mini) while supplies last. Most of the 4th-generation iPads remain available for sale online, but the 16GB models have sold out and shoppers must go to a Target retail store for those models.

Meanwhile, Best Buy is serving up US$50 gift cards with the purchase of the latest generation iPod touch (all colors) (US$294.99) and 4th generation iPod touch ($194.99). A similar deal on the iPod nano throws in a US$20 gift card (US$194.99).

Also, as in years past, Best Buy is selling US$100 iTunes Gift Cards for US$80.

Best Buy lowers third-gen iPad price by $50, throws in $75 gift card for Black Friday promotion

Ok, this is nifty.

Per AppleInsider, retailer Best Buy has dropped the price on 32GB and 64GB 3rd-generation WiFi iPads with Retina Display, and is also throwing in a free US$75 Best Buy gift card with each purchase.

As of press time, Best Buy had only white 32GB (US$549.99) models and black 64GB models (US$649.99) remaining. In addition to the US$50 price drop and $75 Best Buy gift card, each order ships free.

Although Best Buy’s iPad overview page for the 32GB Black WiFi iPad 3 indicates it is sold out, the specific product page for that model still allows your to add it to your shopping cart and says orders will leave the warehouse in 1-2 business days.

Apple posts Black Friday teaser

Following the gluttony, there’s the shopping.

And the savings.

Per Mac|Life, Apple has started teasing its one-day shopping event this Friday, November 23, which is better known as “Black Friday,” a post-Thanksgiving tradition coined by retailers who hope to get their balance sheet into profit for the year at the beginning of the holiday season.

“Get ready to give,” the Apple teaser webpage reads. “Start shopping online after midnight PST or visit your favorite Apple Retail Store during our extended hours. We’ll help you make the most of the day, no matter how you shop.”

Unlike other retailers, Apple won’t be opening its doors at midnight, but they will be offering extended hours at brick-and-mortar locations across the country. Apple discounts are historically quite stingy on Black Friday, but hey, even 10 percent off that gadget you’ve had your eye on might be worth it.

eBay launches Apple certified refurbished products storefront

This could come in handy.

Per AppleInsider, eBay earlier this month introduced a new section to its website dedicated to Apple certified refurbished products, including numerous iPads, MacBooks and iPod touches.

The company’s new Apple Certified Refurbished Product store currently lists a variety of MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad and iPod touch products. The online retailer and auction house says each product has passed through the same quality inspection as those refurbished products available on Apple’s own online store, and each comes with the same full one-year warranty. Additionally, all iPads and iPods include a brand new battery.

For example, an Apple-certified, third-generation, Wi-Fi-only iPad with 32 gigabytes of storage can be had for US$469. And a 15-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.4-gigahertz processor, 4 gigabytes of RAM and a 750-gigabyte hard drive is US$1,699.

LTE iPad mini, fourth-gen iPad now available in retail stores

You’ve been hankering for one of these since they came out.

And now they’re on sale.

Per CNET, Apple’s LTE-equipped iPad Mini and fourth-generation iPad are now available in carrier stores.

Wireless carriers Sprint and AT&T announced today that they’re now carrying the devices. Verizon hasn’t announced its own availability, but the company is also expected to also be carrying the tablets in its stores today.

Apple launched the Wi-Fi-only fourth-generation iPad and iPad Mini on November 2. The company had promised last month when it announced both devices that it would deliver the LTE-equipped models “a couple weeks” after the Wi-Fi-only model. Apple has made good on that promise, despite reports suggesting it might not.

Customers looking to get their hands on the new iPads might want to act quickly. Sprint says it expects “limited quantities” to be available in its stores. Given the strong demand for nearly all Apple products, that will likely be the case at other carrier stores, as well.

The iPad Mini LTE comes in black and white versions, and will range in price from US$459 to US$659. The fourth-generation iPad with LTE starts at US$629 and goes up to US$829.

Thieves snag two pallets, $1.5 million in iPad minis from JFK airport

Because Pauly wanted a new iPad mini and to make a few bucks on the side…

Per the New York Post, a pair of thieves stole $1.5 million worth of Apple iPad minis from a building at New York’s JFK airport that was also the site of a famous robbery in 1978.

Details of the valuable heist were revealed on Thursday by the New York Post. About 3,600 iPad minis that had just arrived from China were taken from one of the airport’s cargo buildings.

That same building was the site of the 1978 Lufthansa heist in which US$5 million in cash and US$875,000 worth of jewelry were stolen — the largest cash robbery to ever occur on U.S. soil. That heist was featured in the 1990 film “GoodFellas” starring Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci.

The incident occurred on Monday, just before midnight, when a pair of thieves reportedly used one of the airport’s own forklifts to steal two pallets of iPad minis. Not all of the shipments were placed on the truck, as the arrival of an airport worker allegedly forced the duo to leave three pallets behind.

Because the thieves arrived with an official JFK forklift, it’s been speculated that an airport employee may have let them into the area near Building 261 around 11 p.m., and also let them out after the iPad minis were stolen.

Apple’s iPad mini has a starting price of US$329 for a 16-gigabyte Wi-Fi-only model. The most expensive option is the 64-gigabyte version with cellular data, which sells for US$659.

20% Samsung price hike could affect Apple’s margins by 1-2%

The ne’er ending fight between Apple and Samsung continues.

Following up on yesterday’s story about Samsung potentially raising the cost of building mobile processors for Apple, such a change would be expected to reduce the company’s overall margins by as much as 2 percentage points.

Per AppleInsider, Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray noted on Wednesday that the processors built by Samsung at its chip fabrication plant in Austin, Tex., are the core component of Apple’s iPhone and iPad. The chips tend to represent between 6 and 9 percent of the total component cost of a given iOS device.

A report surfaced this week that claimed Samsung has increased the price of its mobile processors for Apple as the two rival companies are driven further apart.

Munster said a 20 percent increase in chip prices would result in a hit to Apple’s margins between 1 and 2 percentage points. He also said that he would not be surprised if the price increase turns out to be accurate, “given the legal tension” between the two companies.

But he also buys in to rumors that Apple plans to move its chip production away from Samsung, and will have assembly of its custom processors like the A6 found in the iPhone 5 handed to another company, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.

“We believe that if Apple were to move to another vendor in the next year or two, they may be able to negotiate better chip prices, which would roll back the impact from the Samsung price increase,” he said.

But in the meantime, Munster said it appears Apple has no choice but to continue its partnership with Samsung, even if the Korean electronics maker did put a massive price hike in place.

Piper Jaffray has projected that while Apple’s margins will dip during the December quarter in the face of a number of major product transitions, margins will quickly improve in the company’s fiscal year 2013. Munster has called for Apple to earn gross margins of 41.5 percent for calendar years 2013 and 2014.

“It does not appear that new product launches for iPhone 5 and iPad mini carry significantly different margins than prior launch margins for the same product lines,” he said.

Margins have been a major concern among investors in recent weeks, as Apple’s stock has taken a major hit. But most analysts have stood by Apple. Chris Whitmore of Deutsche Bank said last month that concern over Apple’s margins has been “overblown,” and that the reduction is “nearly entirely cyclical and not structural.”

Apple’s Forstall and Browett to leave company

Well, this might change the software on your iOS device for a few years to come.

Per AppleInsider, Apple announced on Monday that Senior Vice President of iOS Software Scott Forstall will be leaving Cupertino in 2013, while SVP of Retail John Browett is also scheduled to depart at an undetermined time.

It is unclear why Forstall and Browett are leaving Apple, though it appears the remaining executives, including Jony Ive, Bob Masfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi, will shoulder the burden in lieu of replacements.

As head of Apple’s mobile software division, Forstall recently came under fire when iOS Maps was released in a form inaccuracies combined with missing features to prompt pundits and customers to widely pan the mapping service that replaced the Google Maps-powered app shipped in iOS since its inception.

In May, Forstall sold 95 percent of his shares in the company, which at the time was worth US$38.7 million. The executive was due to receive another 100,000 in restricted stock units that fully vest in 2014, and 150,000 restricted units that vest in 2013 and 2016, if he had stayed with Apple.

Forstall is expected to leave Apple sometime next year and will serve as an advisor to CEO Tim Cook in the interim.

Not much was said about SVP of Retail John Browett’s exit, though the departure comes less than one year after the former Dixons CEO was hired by Apple to replace Ron Johnson. According to the release, the entire Retail team will report directly to Cook until a suitable replacement is found.

Like Forstall, Browett’s actions were scrutinized as reports suggested the executive’s plans to raise Apple Store margins was taking its toll on employees.

Perhaps most visible was the alleged firing of recently-hired Apple Store staff in the UK, which was accompanied by drastic working hour cuts in the U.S. and Canada. Browett later claimed the staffing changes were a “mistake” and said they would be reversed, however further reports suggested that an emphasis on revenue was trumping customer experience.

It was revealed in April that Browett received 100,000 restricted stock units worth roughly US$61 million, 5,000 of which recently vested on Oct. 20. An additional 15,000 units were to vest on the executive’s one-year anniversary with Apple, with remaining shares set to vest in 20,000 unit packages every April.

Apple’s announcement regarding the changes:

Apple sells out of all iPad mini models in 35 hours

It doesn’t matter that Amazon took the time to insult the iPad mini’s US$329 price tag, Apple still sold out of its launch inventory on all models of the new tablet.

Per AppleInsider, while it’s unknown how many iPad mini pre-order units were available, Apple seems to have sold through its entire inventory.

All iPad mini models, in black and slate as well as white and silver, in capacities from 16 gigabytes to 64 gigabytes, are all advertise to ship in two weeks. The white and silver model sold out almost immediately, while the entry 16-gigabyte black and slate iPad mini took 35 hours to sell out.
