It’s a rumor, but it’s an interesting one.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a report stating that the 2017 iPhone will feature wireless charging for the first time ever. Instead of plugging in a cable, iPhone 8 owners will be able to charge their batteries using an inductive pad similar to how the Apple Watch charges. While many Android phones support wireless charging with plastic and metal chassis, the report says Apple’s switch to a glass casing for iPhone 8 will enable wireless charging at fast speeds with minimum disruption from frequency interference.

The report also stated that Apple may not bundle a wireless charger with every new model and that these may be limited to the more-expensive, higher-capacity units. Apple is though to be aggressively pursuing wireless charging through 2018 and buyers of base end models may have to buy an additional accessory for this feature.

As much as you love your AirPort router, it may be the last of its kind.

Apple has apparently disbanded its wireless router division, having moved personnel away from this to focus on products that generate more revenue.

Apple began shutting down the wireless router team over the past year, dispersing engineers to other product development groups, including the one handling the Apple TV, said sources who asked not to be named because the decision hasn’t been publicly announced.

One popular rumor for the next-gen iPhone is the adoption of OLED screen panels for the handset, especially given that both the Apple Watch and the Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro now use OLED components.

Unfortunately, supply constraints may keep OLED panels further down the road.

A new report says that the four main suppliers for OLED displays won’t have enough production capacity to meet demand next year and further into 2018. This is primarily due to OLED screens being more difficult to produce than LCD panels. Right now, the four top suppliers for OLED panels are Samsung Display, LG Display, Sharp, and Japan Display. But at this point, Apple expects Samsung to be sole supplier in 2017.

Apple apparently plans to ship at least one new iPhone with an OLED screen next year, the 10th anniversary of the smartphone’s debut according to sources close to the story.

It looks like the AirPods are about to hit the production line.

Following the delayed launch of the new wireless headphones in late October, Apple said it needed “a little more time” before they are ready for customers.

The latest word comes from investment bank Barclays, which in a research note we saw said AirPods should enter production in December. That means AirPods could still feasibly be released in time for the final weeks of the holiday shopping season, although a January 2017 launch as previously rumored, or later, is possible.

Back in late October, Apple delayed the launch of its much-anticipated AirPods, the company stating that it needed “a little more time” before the units were ready for prime time.

Since then, the headphones have been listed as “currently unavailable” on Apple’s web site.

Previous rumors had the AirPods as arriving in January 2017, suggesting they will not be available in time for this year’s holiday shopping season.

If you thought the Jet Black iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus was slick, Apple may be going the opposite route and creating a Jet White version for the handset.

The sixth color option is apparently in the works, though it comes from supply chain sources that “may be unreliable.”

As nifty as the iPhone SE may be, it probably won’t be refreshed in the coming year.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a report to investors state that Apple will prolong iPhone SE’s lifecycle beyond the usual one year rotation in a bid to boost gross margins and minimize cannibalization of high-end flagships like the iPhone 7.

To the point, Kuo noted that it seems unlikely that Apple will launch a new iPhone SE handset in the second fiscal quarter of 2017, which for Apple ends in March. The 4-inch iPhone variant debuted this year on March 31, leaving some to speculate that a next-generation version with updated internals would see release at roughly the same time in 2017. Kuo does not mention plans beyond the second quarter, meaning a refresh might land later in the year.

The new rumors have Apple’s car project incorporating augmented reality somewhere down the line.

Per a report by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has turned its attention to developing a software-based autonomous driving system “make sense”, given that the system will support augmented reality and provide an “innovative user experience”.

All of Apple’s past successes were related to human-machine interfaces, such as mouse for Mac, click wheel for iPod, and multi-touch for iPhone and iPad.

Kuo offered the following note:

If you’re hankering for the new AirPods, you might have to wait until January.

Following Apple’s unexplained delay of the new headphones, foreign supply chain sources are now pointing towards a launch date in January 2017, and not the late 2016 estimation that many believed would help the new devices sell during the holidays.

The Economic Daily News has states that AirPods manufacturing supplier Inventec has anticipated a profit boost from the AirPods come January. Thus, the supplier itself is leaning towards a January release date.

Apple has both taken the long view of its Project Titan automative effort and settled it in Canada.

Apple apparently has “dozens” of software engineers working out of an office outside of Ottawa, Ontario—just a five minute walk from BlackBerry’s QNX division, which provides automotive software. In fact, about two dozen of Apple’s engineers reportedly came directly from QNX.

The hires include former QNX CEO Dan Dodge and Derrick Keefe, a software engineer with decades of experience under his belt.

While QNX doesn’t currently product autonomous driving software, it is on the company’s list of goals. QNX has already reached a deal with AdasWorks to integrate AdasWorks’ software into QNX’s operating system, which already powers systems like BMW ConnectedDrive, Ford Sync3, Buick Intellilink, and others, in more than 60 million vehicles.
