Steps for Dealing with a Cracked iPhone Screen

You have your iPhone. And odds are, you’re pretty fond of it. Still, which the iPhone’s screen can take an admirable amount of abuse, it’s not invincible.
The guys over at iPhone Atlas have put together a quick guide outlining the best procedures for dealing with a cracked iPhone screen should the occasion arise:
-First, a repair/replacement from Apple can run between US$200 and US$250. The iPhone is covered under a standard limited one-year warranty for defects, but is not eligible for AT&T’s wireless phone insurance, which retails for US$5 a month and provides replacements in the case of loss, theft, accidental physical or liquid damage and mechanical and electrical failures after the manufacturer’s warranty period has termed.
-An Apple FAQ list has stated that the company will repair your 4 GB iPhone for US$199 or your 8 GB iPhone for US$249 plus US$6.95 in shipping and handling should your iPhone require service for any reason outside of battery replacement (an US$86 service).
While it can be presumed that this service covers screen cracks, Apple’s FAQ states that ‚Äúservice may not be available if your iPhone has been damaged due to accident or abuse.‚Äù
-Reports have come in to the iPhone Atlas web site that Apple representatives at the Genius Bar have replaced cracked screens for free. This is a nice gesture, but don’t count on it and it seems only likely to occur if the user can prove that the screen was damaged during routine use.
-A variety of do-it-yourself kits have become available and range from US$150 to US$200. Other third party firms have begun to sell replacement iPhone components such as the screen and its associated parts. Installation isn’t for the timid of heart and will violate any remaining Apple warranty.
-Credit card protection is also available. American Express offers a Gold Rewards Card, which includes a purchase protection plan that will repair or replace certain items or reimburse the policy member for the amount charged to the card at up to US$1,0000 per occurrence. The policy will also activate if the item is stolen or accidentally damaged up to 90 days from the date of purchase.

Apple to Expand iPhone Sales to Authorized Business Partner Channel

Since its introduction, it hasn’t been a challenge to get your mitts on an iPhone. Still, additional purchasing options never hurt.
According to The iPod Observer, Apple is now allowing the iPhone to be sold through consultants and other value added providers currently participating in the Apple Authorized Business Agent Program.
The change, which might be seen as a ramping up in production for the iPhone, could also be an effort to test the waters before instituting a wider-scale iPhone sales program. Should such an effort prove successful, iPhone sales could then expand into additional channels such as online and catalog-based authorized resellers.
To date, Apple has sold approximately 270,000 iPhones and expects to sell one million units by the end of its September quarter.

Shape Services Announces IM+ for Skype for iPhone

On Monday, Shape Services announced its IM+ for Skype for iPhone, a program that allows iPhone users to access the Skype VoIP network.
According to Macworld News, IM+ for Skype currently functions on other mobile devices such as BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian and J2ME. Once a user has logged in, they receive full access to their Skype accounts and can make voice calls through their SkypeOut credit balance.
Where the iPhone is concerned, the software is currently in a public beta testing stage. Users can access the service by pointing their iPhone Safari browser to www.skypeforiphone.com.
Shape has stated that the application functions on any network and doesn’t specifically require a Wi-Fi connection to work.

Ecamm Works Out iPhone Videoconferencing Hack During “Iron Coder” Contest

It’s not for sale yet, but it’s as shrewd as it gets.
Apparently the guys at Ecamm Network attended the C-4 developer conference and during the “Iron Coder Live” event, crafted a quick mirror-based hack to allow for videoconferencing via an iPhone.
According to Mac Daddy World, the hack was based around a quick program installed into the iPhone (after the iPhone jailbreak tool created by the iPhone Dev Group was installed) that worked with the camera function to provide the videoconference. The iPhone was then set to speaker mode and a series of Huckleberry mirrors acted as a periscope of sorts with the software reorienting the image and allowing for the image to appear correctly.

No software or source code has been made available, but it’s a clever workaround and will hopefully inspire a cool product.

Users Point Out iPhone Volume Issues

Either the iPhone’s the greatest thing since self-slicing bread or the worst thing ever.
It seems to come down to the individual unit itself.
The guys over at iPhone Atlas are reporting that dozens of iPhone owners have expressed concern with the volume from their iPhone’s earpieces, speakerphone, ringer and alert sounds. In these cases, the volume has proven below normal and the quick fix of setting the volume to the maximum level has sometimes resulting in a severe echoing noise.
Currently available fixes are as follows:
-Apple’s recently-released iPhone Update 1.0.1 seems to have provided a volume boost to some users.
-Performing a restore function can sometimes result in a temporary volume boost.
-Connecting to a stereo or Bluetooth headset can result in higher volumes for calls, but doesn’t address the problem at its core.
Per the article, the problem seems to affect specific iPhones rather than every unit, even though some readers have reported that their replacement units exhibited identical problems.

iTunes String Files Reveal Interesting Possibilities

iTunes may have a few tricks up its sleeve in the near future. The guys over at DownloadSquad have apparently gone digging through the Localizable.strings file on iTunes 7.3.2 and pulled some interesting results according to iPhone Atlas:

“4329.001″ = “Are you sure you want to remove the selected game from your iPhone?”;
“4329.002″ = “Are you sure you want to remove the selected games from your iPhone?”;
We did a little more digging, and found some other interesting entries:
“4320.077″ = “Voice Memos”;
“4320.079″ = “The iPhone “^1” contains new voice memos. Would you like to move these voice memos to your iTunes library?”;
“4320.080″ = “Moving voice memos to your iTunes library…”;
and
“4320.295″ = “You must connect using FireWire to update the iPhone “^FILENAME”.”;
“4320.296″ = “You must connect using FireWire to restore the iPhone “^FILENAME”.”
The strings don’t point to anything specific, but could provide hints that the program will voice memo or Firewire support while the iPhone may be receiving additional game support.
Nothing definitive, but it could point the way to some cool stuff down the road.

Apple Offering Additional Help with iPhone Dead Spots

A group of iPhone users have reported that their handsets have permanently lost responsiveness to touch inputs across parts of the screen – generally about half an inch from the top and bottom of the screen.
According to AppleInsider, the problem remains even after the iPhone has been reset, updated with the 1.0.1 firmware software and cleaned. Most reported instances of this case have required replacements from Apple, whose technical support representatives have become “very familiar” with the touch screen failures and appearing to be bypassing the usual protocols for sending out replacements.
In several cases, customers who took their iPhones into Apple Store locations received brief inspections and three-day repair cycles from Apple. Per the stated US$29 iPhone rental, one customer mentioned that he’d successfully negotiated a waiver of the fee during the repair cycle.
Although Apple hasn’t officially commented about it, the unresponsive touch screens represent the second major hardware anomaly affecting the iPhone, the first being a wide variety of failed AC adapters that shipped with the iPhones.

Duck Hunt for iPhone Released

Give someone a little free time and they might do something interesting with it. Deron Dantzler has apparently written an iPhone version of Nintendo’s classic “Duck Hunt” game.
The game, which was rewritten in JavaScript, took him about a week. Citing himself as a novice and inviting comments and code fixes where applicable, the source code can be found here.
Check out Dantzler’s blog entry for full details ad he recommends Appleopolis as a means of adding web applications and installing them in the launcher.
I currently lack an iPhone, so I can’t really tell you how well the game works, but give it a shot and let me know what you think. And even if Apple only allows iPhone development through its web interface, there’s a slew of cool stuff coming out for it.

New “Send to Web Gallery” Option on iPhone Appearing Elusive for Some

Following up on Apple’s stealth software update for the iPhone in which users found themselves with a “Send to Web Gallery” option within the Camera application.
The guys at iPhone Atlas are reporting that the feature is being picky about where it appears and may only be enabled if users have a .Mac account set up for their iPhone. Additional reports state that the iPhone required a full reset in which both the sleep and home buttons are held down simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.
Appearing as something of a surprise in recent days, the “Send to Web Gallery” option allows iPhones to post an image to an updated .Mac picture gallery. Apple has recently modified the .Mac accounts and included updates for the new iLife 2008 suite, which includes changes to iPhoto and iWeb that allow for a wider degree of online gallery editing by both the owner and guest users.

iPhones Receive “Send to Web Gallery” Feature

This was a bit sneaky, but it could be cool.
Per yesterday’s product announcements, Apple also mentioned a redesigned .Mac system wherein users can use iLife 2008 to submit photos to shared web galleries through an e-mail address. This feature can prove handy with an iPhone and Apple apparently had this in mind.
The guys over at iPhone Alley have noticed that since the announcement, various iPhones (perhaps just the ones that have gone through the first iPhone software update) now feature a “Send to Web Gallery” button. The button can be used in the iPhone’s Camera or Photo application and syncs photos in almost real time as opposed to syncing it through a Mac and uploading the image from there.
