Dummy video offers detailed look at purported next-gen iPhone design

This might be the closest approximation of the next-gen iPhone.

Following scores of renderings, dummy models, and design leaks, the cool cats at OnLeaks and Tiger Mobiles have teamed up to present an iPhone 8 dummy model with an edge-to-edge display, a top bar that will accommodate the front-facing camera and sensors, a vertical dual-lens rear camera, and a glossy black chassis made from glass with a matching and indistinguishable steel band around the edges.

The dummy model is similar to that featured in previous leaks, but is closer to what the rumor mill and leaked design drawings have indicated. As such, the next-gen iPhone is thought to incorporate a slim, almost bezel-free design with a Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the display of the device.

Leaked component images hint at next-gen iPhone features

The world may have gotten a glimpse of the next-gen iPhone’s components.

A redditor who shared some images from “a friend in the industry” has posted what appear to be assorted components and glass back panels for the iPhone 7s, 7s Plus and iPhone 8 designs.

The iPhone 8 front panel features top-to-bottom glass for the display, with a cut-out near the top for the camera and earpiece. The rear glass panel includes a vertical dual-camera cutout with what appears to be the camera’s external component nearby. The camera component includes a top and bottom camera with spacing in the middle for what has been rumored to be the camera’s flash.

Recently published patent application shows how Apple might incorporate Touch Bar, Touch ID functions into next-gen Magic Keyboard

Apple may be looking to bring both the Touch ID and Touch Bar features to an updated version of the Magic Keyboard.

A new Apple patent application, or at least some form of the application, shows a device may also include a processing unit positioned within the housing, and a primary display positioned at least partially within the housing and configured to display a graphical-user interface executed by the processing unit. In some embodiments, the display is an organic light-emitting diode display. The electronic device may be a keyboard device.

iFixit tears down 9.7-inch iPad, finds similar components to original iPad Air

The new 9.7-inch iPad is built on a pretty familiar framework.

Last week, Apple unveiled its 9.7-inch iPad. According to the teardown performed by the coolest of felines at iFixit, the new iPad is essentially a spruced-up version of the original iPad Air released in 2013. They share the same battery and the same display. There are some minor tweaks, too, including the integration of the third-generation A9 chip and Touch ID capabilities.

The new model is a minor upgrade, but arrives at a nice price point wherein the 32GB model is $329, compared to the previous entry-level iPad Air 2 that went for $399.

Apple releases iOS 10.3 update

iOS 10.3 is out and ready to go.

Apple on Monday released iOS 10.3, the latest version of its mobile operating system for its iPhone, iPod touch and iPad devices.

The update, which weighs in at about a 2.4 gigabyte download, offers the following fixes and changes:

Find My iPhone:
– View the current or last known location of your AirPods.

– Play a sound on one or both AirPods to help you find them.

Analyst predicts Apple will switch from Touch ID to facial recognition technology for next-gen iPhone

It’s rumored that the next-gen iPhone will feature a front-facing 3D laser scanner for facial recognition according to JPMorgan analyst Rod Hall.

Hall has stated that the scanner will replace the Touch ID on the next-gen iPhone, as Apple is apparently looking to replace the Home button to allow for an edge-to-edge display. Hall’s note cites that the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus could also have a 3D laser scanner based on increased volume of the module within Apple’s supply chain.

The scanner component is said to add about $10 to $15 to the next-gen iPhone’s bill of materials, which coupled with the OLED display, glass casing, and other increased production costs, could make its retail price up to $100 more expensive than it would be without those features, if Apple looks to maintain a similar profit margin.

Rumor: Apple to incorporate next-gen ARM-based processor into future Macs to handle low-power functions

This is pretty nifty.

Apple is apparently developing an ARM-based chip for its Mac products that would “take on more of the functionality” handled by Intel processors.

In development since last year, the chip, codenamed T310, is said to be similar to the chip used to power the Touch Bar in the new 2016 Macbook Pro. It’s built using ARM technology and will work with the standard Intel processor, handling “Power Nap” low-power mode functionality.

Rumor: Apple to opt for glass front and back with next-gen iPhone, perhaps use iPhone 4-style stainless steel frame

It’s the supply chain rumors that make things interesting.

In the latest supply chain report, Apple is thought to be abandoning aluminum in favor of glass for the next-gen iPhone’s back and front. It’s thought that the company will use a stainless steel frame to hold together glass panels along the lines of the iPhone 4 design.

The next-generation iPhone is expected to abandon its conventional aluminum back cover design and will adopt a new design using two reinforced glass panes and a metal frame in the middle. The metal bezel will be made of stainless steel using a forging process to enhance its sturdiness and reduce costs and manufacturing time.

Rumor: Apple could see OLED supply constraint prior to inclusion in next-gen iPhone

One popular rumor for the next-gen iPhone is the adoption of OLED screen panels for the handset, especially given that both the Apple Watch and the Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro now use OLED components.

Unfortunately, supply constraints may keep OLED panels further down the road.

A new report says that the four main suppliers for OLED displays won’t have enough production capacity to meet demand next year and further into 2018. This is primarily due to OLED screens being more difficult to produce than LCD panels. Right now, the four top suppliers for OLED panels are Samsung Display, LG Display, Sharp, and Japan Display. But at this point, Apple expects Samsung to be sole supplier in 2017.

Apple apparently plans to ship at least one new iPhone with an OLED screen next year, the 10th anniversary of the smartphone’s debut according to sources close to the story.

iFixit completes first Touch Bar-equipped 13-inch MacBook Pro teardown, finds interesting new changes in hardware

The cool cats at iFixit have finished their teardown of the new 13-inch Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro and discovered some neat differences when compared with the MacBook Pro without the Touch Bar. First, both 13-inch models have the exact same dimensions, but the Touch Bar machine weighs 20 grams less, which iFixit puts down to the laptop’s smaller battery.

The new MacBook Pro is not designed to be user-serviceable, which iFixit commented on by giving it a repairability rating of 1/10. During the teardown, the firm found that the internal layout of the components has been redesigned to make space for the new Touch Bar, which broke as it was removed from the chassis and was deemed difficult to replace. The flex cable connecting the Touch Bar to the mainboard also wraps underneath it, making removal even more difficult.
