Cheap Combo Drive for the Mac

Just thought I’d share this: I live in England and have been looking for a combo drive (CD-RW/DVD) solution for my G4 desktop for a while now. I had given up, as the cheapest solution seemed to be keeping my internal DVD drive and just getting an external Firewire/USB CD-RW. Starting prices seemed to be around £100+ for this, however.

Last week I was in Dixons (electronics store chain) and found an LG Electronics internal combo drive on the shelf for £80! (That’s approx. USD$117). Of course the box only said Win 95/98/ME/2000 compatible but it also mentioned Linux, so on a gamble I purchased the drive and lo and behold it works perfectly on my machine (OS 10.1.5). It is a 12x CD-R write, 8x CD-RW re-write, 32x CD read, 8x DVD read. This is still an improvement over my 24x CD / 6x DVD reader and is Apple Disc Burner compatible.

It’s a dream come true, and if anyone’s looking for a relatively cheap upgrade, it’s seems to be just the ticket.
