Combo Drives Due For TiBook

If you recently purchased a TiBook 550 or 667 MHz TiBook you can stop reading now. If you didn’t, count yourself lucky. TiBooks with combo drives are imminent. They new drives were originally thought to be a “silent upgrade” with CTO ordering available from the Apple Store on or around Macworld Expo time.

We have been hearing from various sources – for over two months – that a combo drive (DVD/CD-RW) was due for the TiBook, but it hasn’t yet turn into a reality. New reports at Think Secret and MacPlus suggest that it could come out as soon as early as Monday or Tuesday.

MacConnection’s French Web site is already listing the new part numbers:

  • M APPLE POWERBOOK 667MHZ/512M/30GO COMBO DVD/CDRW
    E396535 – FF21,390 (€3,260.88)
  • M APPLE POWERBOOK 550MHZ/256M/20GO COMBO DVD/CDRW
    E396526 – FF16,590 (€2,529.13)

I hope that Apple will be offering some form of trade-up offer to recent purchasers of the newest TiBooks, otherwise the natives are sure to get restless. Comment on this topic in our PowerBook G4 Message Board.
