Apple Hardware iPhone iPhone 6 Rumor

Evidence that Apple is releasing two new iPhone 6 models?

iPhone-6-proto-sizes

Countless rumors and reports, including ones here on the PowerPage, have all but taken it for granted now that Apple will be announcing two new models of iPhone next month. Spy photos and prototype cases have been pointing to a 4.7 inch (screen) model and a 5.5 inch model, the latter being Apple’s entry into the “phablet” market. While the more reasonable seeming 4.7 inch iPhone 6 hasn’t been confirmed, an agency in Thailand says it has absolute proof that two different models exist.

As BGR reports, the website Manager Online is reporting that Takorn Tantasith, Secretary General of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), has announced this week that his agency approved Apple’s request to import two new iPhone 6 models for distribution in Thailand. According to BGR;

“The report claims that Apple filed the import application on August 5th and was approved just three days later on August 8th for two devices with model numbers A1586 and A1524. Apparently, Apple requested that the documents remain secret, but government regulations require that the information be made available to the public.”

The model number given do jive with Apple’s previous numbering scheme:

  • iPhone 5 (A1428, A1429)
  • iPhone 5c (A1532)
  • iPhone 5s (A1533)

However, the model number A1524 is a bit suspicious as all of the previous iPhone model numbers are sequential. It would be strange for Apple to use numbers preceding the iPhone 5c’s. That may be nitpicking, and maybe the numbers were reported incorrectly, but regardless, I personally don’t accept this as proof of anything. I don’t think it is a stretch to believe we’ll see two sizes (but no NFC, seriously), but the proof will be in the pudding, or in this case, in the Yerba Buena Center on September 9th.
