Extending the iPod

Could the iPod do more?
Besides software, what prevents the original click wheel iPod from becoming an external hard drive for a digital camcorder (like MCE’s QuickStream DV), for example? What are the limitations of the iPod? Could new software feature be added? Could there be a future in developing software for the iPod that could capture video?
It would be cool to combine the iSight and an iPod into a makeshift a digital video camera. Can someone technically gifted please explain the ramifications of doing something like this? With over 2,000,000 iPods sold, the world needs more iPod hacks.
Or what about something even simpler, make the iPod into a recorder so that it could capture high fidelity audio for field recording (not the compressed Voice Memos.) I am most interested in a BPM indicator, pitch control, cueing and scratching. Heck, I’d be happy if they added a “show all” view to the iPod that displayed the Artist, Song, Album, Genre and Rating on a single screen. Currently, you have to click twice on each song to see its rating. What’s your iPod wishlist?
