The third option has come for some iMac owners looking to burn CDs. Formac offers the iProRaidTV mezzanine slot card for Rev. A and Rev. B iMacs. It offers a TV tuner, video digitizer, and a Ultra2 SCSI port to your iMac. Now, you’ll have access to the wonderful world of SCSI drives, including CD burners.A NoBeige reader comments on his own experiences with this card:
I’m a user of the Formac iProRaidTVSCSI mezzanine card with my Rev B iMacand can say it works great for duplicatingCDs. I’ve burned over 20 audio discs at4x speed (usually about 15-20 minutes)without any coasters. I use a Yamaha 4416external SCSI recorder and Jam. RetrospectExpress also backed up my iMac with the CD-Rdrive without a problem.
As of today (10/27) the Formac websitehas the iProRaid TV card listedand Club Mac’s website shows it asin stock for $149.
Installation was actually easier thanit looked, but having already upgradedmy RAM I kind of knew what I was in for.I’d recommend the iProRaid card for anyiMac ol’ timer (Rev A or B) lookingfor SCSI.
Be warned that not only is the installation quite hairy, but connecting and properly terminating SCSI chains isn’t for the faint of heart, either.
