Default Do I want an iPhone?

I've recently traded in my car for the bus. It turns out that I can get from my home to my job in a fairly short amount of time while riding public transit. This has saved me an enormous amount of money in car payments, insurance, and parking fees. It helps that I live in a city, so I don't really need a car for much.

Anyway, the one thing that would make my life much easier is: internet on the bus. That way, I can use my commute times to read the PowerPage and check emails. Lately, I've just been using a laptop, I can usually find open networks for a moment or two when stopped at a light in a heavy-apartment area. But this is suboptimal, clearly.

What I want is a device that will let me easily surf the web and check emails while I'm mobile. The iPhone does this, and I can afford it. Heck, for the car payment, I can afford several! The thing is, I don't know if that's what I want for certain. Are there other, competing devices I should check out? I've looked at the sidekick, for example (not as good). Anything else?

IMHO - The iPhone is a collection of compromises but probably the best collections of compromises on the market right now.

True web browser that's very easy to read and navigate
EDGE network isn't exactly cutting edge
Easily connects to open wifi hotspots

Of course there will be other very cool things for you to play with on your commute too. Watch shows, movies or YouTube and of course e-mail.

If I were you, I would go for it but I guess I already did.

Okay, cool. That's what I've been hearing in general. The price cut made it very competitive with other internet phones, and the video/audio support (as well as the purty-factor) have sold me on it.

The only issue is: what's the likelihood that there'll be a 3G-compatible iPhone in the next 2 months? I _could_ wait and get one of these things as a birthday present to myself, or I could go out and just get one today. I'm going to be a little if Apple releases a 3G iPhone the day after I go buy one, since that seems like the biggest complaint about the iPhone so far.

I was looking at AT&T's page, and they clearly have some 3G network and are theoretically working on improving coverage.

Ya, I'm sure they'll have the 3G network the day after you buy...so hurry up

I doubt the 2nd gen. iPhone will be 3G. I don't think they would realease to Europe with EDGE so close to Q1 if they had a 3G in the works. Plus the current $100 refund "lesson" (1 million iPhones X $100! ) that Apple is going through. More likely will be a second model (iPhone nano?) with minor updates to the current version. I would be happy with more storage.

The big question is can you wait for Q1 to see if they come out with anything cool?

Some of the threads are quite interesting whereas there are certain posts which are totally irrelevant.

If you wanna use the iPhone to use the internet wherever you go that is a very good decision....that is comfortable and convinient way of browsing the net.
Thanks

Default Do I want an iPhone

Would all the new features that will come with the new iPhone 3gs be achieveable with the current iPhone 3g?
Im considering replacing my iPod touch with an iPhone and just wondered whether all the new features could be done with the jailbreaks.

Thanks
