Hack: User pulls off ROM hack, runs Mac OS 6.0.1 on Amiga 500 computer

This is one of the cooler old-school projects out there.

And it seems to have worked.

Apparently, Reddit and imgur user “wowbobwow” was able to get Mac OS 6.0.1 running on an Amiga 500 computer. This was achieved by using an emulator called “A-Max” that allowed Mac ROM chips to be run on the Amiga.

Once this was done, the Amiga was able to execute the Mac code on the computer’s Motorola 68000 processor, which was the same processor shared by the Macs and Amigas of that era.

This doesn’t change the earth or find your car keys, but it is a really cool proof of concept for those of us who remember life under Mac OS 6.0.1 and the arguments from the Amiga base of the time.

My first Mac was actually an Atari, with grey market Apple ROMs that came with a third party, David Small. He made a box that connected with the ROMs to the Atari through the game cartridge port. It had a bigger screen than the little box of a the Mac and a much better resolution. The f keys could be configured to mount partitions and if I remember correctly, to toggle between the Atari and Mac. Loved the Atari because, at the time Notator was the only serious music solution for both transcribing and sequencing and the Atari had the MIDI ports built in. By the way, after many later versions of Notator, Apple bought it developed what is now GarageBand.
