Handspring Announces Wireless Treo PDAs

Handspring has announced a new PDA today that incorporates wireless functionality: the Treo 180 and Treo 180g. The Treo 180 uses a tiny keyboard and the Treo 180g uses the more traditional Graffiti handwriting recognition for text input.

Both models have black and white displays and are equipped with wireless modems that can convert the PDA into a cell phone (like their current VisorPhone) or small Internet access device. The new models pack a 33 MHz Dragonball VZ processor, 16 MB DRAM, rechargeable batteries and a flip-cover that doubles as a phone earpiece. Pricing is US$399 with telephone activation and availability is listed as “Early 2002.”

The Handspring Web site also mentions as color version, the Treo 270, as “coming mid 2002” with essentially the same specs plus color for US$599 with service activation. No word on whether or not the new Treo line is available without service activation.
