Ever since the introduction of the LCD iMac at Macworld Expo SF ’02 one of the most popular topics around the PowerPage water cooler has been the iBook/G4. Logic dictates that when Apple bumps its low-end desktop lineup (iMac) to the G4 processor that the iBook cannot be far behind. Some of the PowerPage’s sources concur, adding that “it is only a matter of time.” Walk on, err, read on using the link below…

Some of the PowerPage’s sources concur, adding that “it is only a matter of time.”

Steve Jobs has clearly made it a priority to move the entire Mac lineup to the G4 processor since stunning everyone with G4 iMacs in January. The iBook is currently languishing with a lowly G3 processor running at 500 or 600 MHz which stifles the Mac OS X user experience. Knowing full well that OS X (especially in it’s recent incarnations) is really optimized for a G4 (or higher) processor, SJ is apparently bringing his “G4s for all” strategy to the iBook.

Word is still mum on the when the new G4 iBooks will be announced, but next month’s Macworld Expo Tokyo (21-23 March) looks like a candidate. Steve Jobs has used Tokyo as a venue for announcements in years past:

  • Macworld Expo Tokyo 2001 – Announced: Flower Power, Blue Dalmatian iMacs Announced,CD-RW cube
  • Macworld Expo Tokyo 2000 (10th Macworld Tokyo) – Announced: Pismo G3/500, graphite iBook G3/366, 400/450/500 DT G4s

So, if you believe in trends, next month’s show at Big Sight may have something in store for iBook buyers.

When, if ever, do you think the iBook/G4 will be announced? What do you think Steve Jobs will announce at Macworld Expo Tokyo ’02? What is on your wish list for the updated iBook?
