Apple Releases Graphics Firmware 1.0 Update for Aluminum iMacs
16 November 2007 08:52 EST
Chris Barylick

Late Thursday, Apple released a firmware update for its 20 and 24 inch aluminum iMac computers featuring the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics card and Mac OS X 10.4.10. The update, a 772 kilobyte download, is designed to improve system stability and help remove the infamous "graphics freezing" bug that's become synonymous with these models.

The update is also available via Mac OS X's built-in Software Update feature and requires an aluminum iMac running Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install.

If you've tried the update and have any feedback regarding it, let us know in the comments or forums.

Aluminum iMac Freezing Issue May Be Hardware Bug
12 November 2007 02:09 EST
Chris Barylick

17inchimac.jpg

A variety of reports seems to be suggesting that frequent video lockups experienced by some owners of Apple's new aluminum iMacs may in fact be the result of a faulty graphics video component or overheating rather than a software bug, as had originally been thought.

According to AppleInsider, an owner noted that freezes on his new 20" imac have virtually vanished since Apple replaced the Radeon HD video chipset in the computer, thereby pointing to a hardware error.

"So far that [repair] has fixed it completely," he says, observing that the iMac has been stable for two weeks since its return. "We'll see if the same issue starts back up again."

Other users have provided evidence that the lockups and associated problems are being generated either by a hardware issue or excessive heat inside the chassis. In many cases, users have reported graphical corruption in the operating system as a precursor to the system freezes, a sign that historically indicates that a video card is being pushed beyond its safe operating temperatures. In some cases, visual artifacts appeared and became increasingly more likely as time went on.

In the case of AppleInsider staff, a review unit released in August showed very brief white streaks darting across the screen as well as visual corruption in certain programs, especially those that required a full-screen mode.

Apple Acknowledges Aluminum iMac Freezing Bug
05 October 2007 08:45 EST
Chris Barylick

aluminumimac.jpg

Late Thursday, after weeks of frustrated and contentious posts to its web site, Apple officially acknowledged recent problems with its newly-released aluminum iMac computers and promised a fix as soon as possible:

“A small number of iMac users have made us aware that a recent software update issued by Apple can sometimes cause their iMacs to freeze, requiring them to restart their iMac,” an Apple spokesperson told Macworld News.

Various users have reported that the iMac becomes inoperable after various periods of time and in mixed circumstances. The computers apparently require a hard reset after the interface freezes, allowing the user to move the mouse around and to tab between applications, but little else to happen.

“We are tracking down the root cause of this bug, and will issue a software update which corrects it as soon as we can — most likely later this month,” the company spokesperson said. “We apologize for the inconvenience.”

If you've seen the issue on your end or have an opinion about this, let us know in the comments and forums.

Aluminum iMac Users Reporting Interface Freezes
03 October 2007 01:29 EST
Chris Barylick

You can't win all the time and firmware updates exist for a reason.

A number of users have reported in to the Apple discussion boards (pages one and two) that the system has locked up via its interface, thereby requiring a reboot.

According to AppleInsider, the interface itself will freeze, so programs will continue to run, although new items cannot be selected and current applications can't be tabbed through or opened.

Other users have reported that some basic functions remain during these crashes such as the ability to pause music in iTunes or activate the caps lock key.

New iMac Chiclet Keyboard Leaked
27 July 2007 09:38 EST
Jason D. O'Grady

See that? That's the rumored, "super slim," brushed aluminum keyboard said to be accompanying Apple's new iMac computer. It certainly appears to share the key design of the MacBook like we heard but seeing "Photoshop" in the exif data doesn't give us a high degree of confidence here. Regardless, a forum jockey over at the Rhapsody Apple forum in Hong Kong will sell you the keyboard (s/he has more than one) for 1,200 of the local stuff or about $153.40.
There's a pretty convincing five photo gallery aprés jump. Right down to the Apple Development Team sticker on the bottom (with serial and barcode) thats bound to get someone fired.

Do you love it or hate it?
