Inside the AirPort Base Station

A PowerPage reader had the chance to take off the cover of an AirPort base station and see what was inside. The reader says, “He had some problems with the BaseStation overheating (not a good thing). While on the phone with Apple, he removed the cover, and inside was a standard AirPort card! Removing the cover did solve the overheating problem, but it does not bode well for the Base Stations already in circulation.”

Airport card + base station (modem, ethernet, router) = Airport Base Station. Other more expensive wireless access points such as the Nokia A020 are built similarly. They usually have a PC Card slot which accepts a wireless networking card just like the ones you would put in a PowerBook.
