In searching for a good pedestal mount that will allow me to mount my iPod securely in my vehicle I came across the Panavise PortaGrip 2000 – Model 702, a portable mobile phone holder with fully-adjustable width and length and sure grip jaws.

To install the PortaGrip 2000 in your vehicle you will also need a mount or flexible arm to hold it in place. For this project I selected the Panavise UniFlex Series Model 797-10 flexible mounting arm. It has a knuckle at the head that tilts 210º and rotates 360º and a pinch design that prevents the flex shaft from coming loose from the base. The flex mount is available in 10, 12 and 14-inch overall lengths.

The PortaGrip 2000 – Model 702 fits the iPod pretty well although it is slightly taller than the iPod itself. When you put your iPod in the PortaGrip you secure it by squeezing closed the jaws which are padded with soft grippy rubber. When you need to remove the iPod, simply press the grey button on the left side and the jaws pop open.

A unique feature of the PortaGrip when compared to other mobile phone holders is that it leaves the top of the iPod unobstructed allowing easy access to the eighth-inch headphone jack, hold switch and FireWire port. To connect the iPod my system I used a six foot specialty Y-Adapter from Radio Shack with a right angle plug (Part# 42-2483) connected to an auxiliary input selector that connects to my Alpine head unit.

The Panavise cell phone/pedestal solution is strong and looks good to boot. In my first two weeks of using the Panavise PortaGrip 2000 it has kept my iPod snug and safe – even when navigating some pretty rough and bouncy roads. Highly recommended. You can find a Panavise sales representative in your area from their Web site.
