LaCie Ships iDVD Alternative

Sad because your Mac doesn’t have an internal SuperDrive, so you can’t run iDVD? LaCie has an alternative. The company is shipping Pixela’s CaptyDVD, a DVD/Video CD authoring solution that supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and QuickTime movies as video sources.

Ed: The software lists for US$149, and includes support for external FireWire DVD drives — great for upgrading your pre-SuperDrive PowerBook. And, yes, DVD Studio Pro does support external drives — if you’ve got US$999 burning a hole in your pocket. If you’ve already bought a LaCie DVD drive, which didn’t previously support video authoring, the price is reduced to US$70 if you purchased in the last three months. Stay tuned to the PowerPage for a review. -PK
