Mac Lovers and Sushi

I’ve been using Apple Computers since I was in first grade. My first grade teacher used to schedule us in the computer room once or twice a week to practice our key boarding skills using Type To Learn with the friendly little QWERTY critter that danced all over the screen. It was pure bliss for me. Those were the days, learning to touch-type in a relaxed elementary school environment and eating prepared peanut butter and jelly sandwiches courtesy of mom for lunch.

As I have continued to use Apple Computers I successfully graduated from the Type To Learn Days and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Sometimes the sense of a Mac community overwhelms me. All Mac people I have met are very friendly and courteous. However, one of the weirdest things I have noticed is a connection between Mac aficionados and sushi? All of my Mac-loving friend are also raw fish fiends! I don’t have a Mac friend that isn’t just as much in love with his new PowerBook as he/she is with a plate of an assorted sashimi combo.

Is this just a mere coincidence? I think not! The art of good sushi and Apple Computers have a lot in common. Both have high quality content (i.e. fresh fish and good hardware) and are visual friendly (i.e. the cosmetics are a beauty to look at on a new G4, just as a fresh plate of sushi can be viewed as edible art). Maybe Apple people are just much more intelligent than our PC using comrades to realize that fish is indispensable for good health. Below are seven different sicknesses and illnesses and how fish has a positive effect on preventing them. (Information below courtesy of Kayuga.com).

  1. Heart Disease It is known through medical researches that eating fish regularly could prevent heart attacks and cardiac arrests.
  2. Rheumatoid Arthritis It is reported that some patients taking omega-3 supplements had less joint pain and less morning stiffness.
  3. Cancer ”A report says that omega-3s suppress tumor growth in animals. Japanese women have only a third as much breast cancer as American women. Heavy use of foods such as fish and soy in the Japanese diet may be responsible. A recent study of 25 women showed that supplemental fish oil could change the ratio of fats in breast tissue.”
  4. Strokes EPA helps to make the platelets in blood less sticky, thus preventing the build-up of plaque, which triggers stroke and heart disease.
  5. Brain/nerve system development in children (young mother and children) DHA is required for the optimal development of the nervous system in particular for children. DHA is associated with good memory and development of brain cells. This substance promote activity in brain.
  6. Alzheimer’s Disease ”In a study of more than 1,000 people (average age 75), those with high blood levels of an omega-3 called DHA were more than 40% less likely to develop dementia (including Alzheimer’s) over the next nine years than people with low DHA levels. One theory why: We know the brain latches onto DHA — its favorite fat — to help build membranes around nerve cells; possibly the more DHA, the easier it is to zap messages from cell to cell.”
  7. Depression ”Because the brain is the richest source of fatty acids in the human body, and because proper nerve cell function is critically dependent on proper membrane fluidity, alterations in membrane fluidity impact behavior, mood, and mental function. Lack of omega-3 acids may contribute to depression.”
