As a follow-up to our article on fax calling tones (“Apple USB Modems Cripple Fax Capability“) we are happy to report that Mac OS X 10.2.5 fixes the problem.

We tested an iMac G4/800 17-inch and it did not generate calling tones under 10.2.4 and does under 10.2.5. This was verified with Apple’s Developer Technical Support (DTS) that there is indeed a fix in 10.2.5. Apparently, the Sound Manager was being initialized too late to generate the CNG tones prior to 10.2.5.

Smile Software’s Page Sender was updated to version 3.0.1 on April 8, 2003 and Macworld magazine awarded version 2.3.1 four mice in their May 2003 fax software roundup. The author tells the PowerPage that both “cons” noted in the article have been addressed in 3.0.
