Mac OS X: Installation on Wallstreet I

Mac OS X can only install in the first 8 GB of a drive on all first-generation G3 machines, including the original PowerBook G3 Series (a.k.a. Wallstreet I).

Apple’s Before You Install Mac OS X document states:

If you install Mac OS X on a PowerBook G3 Series computer that does not have USB, an original Power Macintosh G3 (Beige),or a Rev.A,Rev.B,Rev.C,or Rev.D iMac,and the hard disk is larger than 8 GB with more than one partition,be sure to select a destination partition for Mac OS X that is completely within the first 8 GB of the disk.

Translation: Mac OS X must be installed on a partition that exists entirely within the first 8 GB of the hard drive. If you have a larger drive with only one partition you must partition it so that you’ll have a partition entirely within the first 8 GB.

Apple TIL #106235 (“Disk Appears Dimmed (or “Grayed Out”) in the Installer“) has more details.
