Apple Releases Updated MacBooks, Offers 2.6 GHz MacBook Pro

Chris Barylick
In the middle of the night, Apple quietly updated its MacBook laptop selection to feature new models with Intel's Santa Rosa architecture, somewhat improved speeds and GMA X3100 integrated video systems.
The specs for the new units are as follows:
White 13.3" MacBook:
-2.0 GHz/1 GB of RAM/80 GB hard drive/Combo/GMA X3100 for US$1099.00
-2.2 GHz/1 GB of RAM/120 GB hard drive /Dual Layer SuperDrive/GMA X3100 for US$1,299.00
Black 13.3" MacBook:
-2.2 GHz/1 GB of RAM/160 GB hard drive/Dual Layer SuperDrive/GMA X3100 for US$1,499.00
According to MacRumors, the new laptops boast a faster 800 MHz front side bus over previous models while the GMA X3100 card allows for improved video, especially in a consolidated chipset. Other changes include a raised RAM capacity that jumped from two gigabytes to four gigabytes and 144 MB of graphics allocation to the new Intel GMA X3100 card - up from 64 MB found in Intel's GMA 950 graphics chipset that had been incorporated in the previous MacBook line.
The company is also offering a 2.6 GHz MacBook Pro featuring a 250 gigabyte hard drive.
For full details, head over to the Apple Store.

Your Favorite Mac now in Black... or Red, Blue, Purple, Pink or Green.

AlumaMax uses anodizing, a durable, attractive coating that utilizes electric current to oxidize the surface of the aluminum. The process produces a sleek metallic finish that cannot be achieved with paint. AlumaMax services feature vibrant colors similar to much of the iPod line - an option previously not available on Apple’s “Pro” level systems.
Using the same process Apple Computer uses during manufacture, your system’s appearance can now be colored to your liking.
The company offers a tinting service for owners with existing hardware or you can configure and purchase new, directly from them. Prices begin at $49 for a "send-in" keyboard tint and end with the 8-core Mac Pro at $4599.
"We're working the process details out for the MacBook Pro and iPhone line. We expect to have them on our site soon."
AlumaMax develops and markets enhancements to Apple Computer products. The company specializes in re-finishing aluminum computers in brilliant colors. The company also develops custom application, touchscreen enabled, in-car Apple Computer based multimedia systems.

Mac Pro with Room to Grow
09 August 2006 12:00 EST
Bob Snow
When the G5 tower was unveiled at the final Macworld Expo held in New York, I loved the look of it. The brushed metal, the purposeful grilles, the integrated lifting hoops. The machine looked sleek and professional but it was BIG, about 5/4 size. The entire case seemed to be designed around fans and air flow.
Well, there is no Macworld Expo scheduled this summer, so the Intel Mac Pro was unveiled at WWDC. The leaked banner photo gave no clue about the new pro machine, because in profile it looks just like the one it replaces. What does Intel Xeon mean for the Mac desktop workhorse? Well, it is still a 64 bit computer, something the other Intel Macs don't offer. Otherwise, you have the basic drop in price and increase in performance that seems to be part of the transition to Intel. So, is it just a new processor in the same old box?
Not really. The thing I like about the new machine is that the BIG enclosure has a lot of internal space freed up by the lower thermal loads imposed by the new processors. Now there is real expansion space inside the box. Two optical drive bays and a modular approach for accommodating up to four internal hard drives. Now the box justifies its size and looks even more purposeful. The G5 tower did not sell very well because it did not offer enough performance for the price. This new workstation does.
There are no G5 Power Macs left in the pipeline either. The transition is complete. I think that one of the Intel Macs is ripe for a refresh. The PowerMac Pro notebooks were the first out of the gate with Core Duo "Yonah" processors, but the consumer MacBooks that followed are such a tremendous value that the Pro notebooks would benefit from the latest "Merom" Core 2 Duo chips from Intel. The entire lineup could represent the best value Apple has ever delivered, across the board, top to bottom, stem to stern.

Apple Cuts Heads
05 January 2005 08:04 EST
Apple quietly cut the price of its LCD monitors. If there is a headless iMac, the 20 incher is still pricey at $999. I think the monitor of choice for a $499 Mac may end up being the Plasma Display that is already hanging on the wall in the media room!

The New iMac is Nice Enough
31 August 2004 06:42 EST
The best thing about the new iMac design is that it is more compact and easier to transport than the previous version. Think of the luxo-lamp G4 iMac as a desktop computer, squeezed into a half sphere with a mighty arm holding up the screen. The latest iMac is more like a laptop computer with the screen welded in place facing outward like a tablet PC. It is then simply mounted on an aluminum support that matches the recently introduced aluminum monitors.
In terms of performance, the big difference is the G5 processor cooled by three fans that pull air from the bottom of the enclosure and out through the top. It also comes with NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 graphics processor.
So, what's not to like? Priced at US$1,299 the base model surely represents a better value than the previous G4 iMac, but Apple desperately needs to fight back against the continuing erosion in market share. When compared to the cost and performance of a G4 17" PowerBook, price looks fantastic, but there is a need at the low end for something other than the eMac. The iMac remains a high priced, design oriented product. Until the G5 makes it into a laptop enclosure, it has a solid place in the lineup because of its superior performance.
The call for a "headless" iMac has not been heard by Apple - yet. It would be nice to see a G5 headless box priced $100 less than an eMac. The time for a Mac with a built-in CRT has passed and the eMac should evolve into a more powerful mainstream solution. One that a lot of people have been asking for.

Apple Displays for a Wider Audience
29 June 2004 08:09 EST
The new Apple Displays now match the look of the G5 towers with new aluminum frames and stands, but the real change is the move away from the Apple ADC connector. While very convenient for users of Apple desktop machines, the ADC connector kept Apple displays from selling to a larger market. With Apple market share low, the incorporation of industry standard VESA mounting and conventional DVI connectors in the two smaller screens greatly increases the market for these beauties.

So how do you know if the cool handset you read about here on PowerPage is going to work with your Mac? How do you know if it will work with your carrier of choice? What does it mean when some handsets have "GSM 850" and others don't? What is a World Phone?

Apple Updates iMacs to 1.25GHz with USB 2
08 September 2003 02:50 EST
Apple today bumped the iMac to 1.25GHz adding USB 2 and Airport Extreme but, surprisingly, no FireWire800. Pricing remains the same at US$1299 and US$1799.
Could this mean that USB 2.0 is coming on the PowerBook revisions? PowerPage sources say no.Apple today announced significant enhancements to its popular line of iMac desktop computers, including faster PowerPC G4 processors running up to 1.25 GHz, faster 333 MHz DDR memory, faster NVIDIA graphics and the move to the faster USB 2.0 standard.
The new iMacs sport faster PowerPC G4 processors running at 1.0 GHz in the 15-inch model and 1.25 GHz in the 17-inch model. Both models include 256MB of faster DDR SDRAM running at 333 MHz and an 80GB Ultra ATA/100 hard disk drive. The 17-inch model also includes NVIDIA's GeForce FX 5200 Ultra graphics processor with 64MB of DDR video memory.
