Mactell announced on Friday that their FireWire tape backup drive, the FirePower FireDrive DAT, is shipping, with a list price of US$849.99 and an estimated street price of US$799.It will come with the backup software, Retrospect 4.1, and a desktop mounting utility,Desktape Pro 4.8.
DAT drives have long been the mainstay of backup for large workgroups because of thehigh price of drives and low price of tapes.
FireWire is currently a popular bus for digital video and mass storage devices. PowerBookusers looking to use FireWire devices will need either the forthcoming Newer Technology FireWire 2 Go PC card or the shipping Ratoc PC card.
