?Mad As Hell? Security Expert Dumps PC

Winn Schwartau was so ?Mad as Hell? at his Windows/Intel (WinTel) products, he bought his corporate staff and family a host of Apple Computers and started preaching its security and cost of ownership benefits in a ?Network World? Winn Schwartau was so ?Mad as Hell? at his Windows/Intel (WinTel) products, he bought his corporate staff and family a host of Apple Computers and started preaching its security and cost of ownership benefits in a ?Network World? Column and on his blog, Security Awareness for Ma, Pa and the Corporate Clueless. On Wednesday, May 25, Schwartau realized he was now part of the Mac community as tens of thousands visited his blog and commented on the epic PC versus Mac battle.
?I was blind, arrogant and a PC bigot,? Schwartau said, known worldwide for his computer security and Information Warfare expertise. He has started posting a 50-part series on the blog titled ?Mad as Hell ? Switching to Mac?. The series, published at http://securityawareness.blogspot.com, will be dedicated to his security reasoning for the switch from PC to Mac, an analysis of the systems approach to security and his progress in learning the newly released Mac OS X Tiger.
The Security Awareness blog traffic spiked (nearly 40,000 unique visitors and about 60,000 page views on Thursday alone) after news outlets and blogs published the story about Schwartau?s conversion. As a result, thousands of PC and Mac enthusiasts debated on the Security Awareness blog and Mac-related internet forums about the ?Mad as Hell? series.
?I really am not blaming any of this on Microsoft, Dell, Sony or other vendors,? Schwartau said. ?As my “Mad As Hell” series will hopefully prove, I have decided to look at PC/WinTel Security from a Systems Engineering View. The cost – the unacceptably immense financial premium that the WinTel world demands of its users – is going to be the straw that breaks the WinTel back! I could no longer afford WinTel.?
Several recent time-consuming and critical breakdowns of hardware and software at Schwartau?s Security Awareness Company, Interpact Inc., resulted in his ?over the top? frustration. ?If I spent 100 hours (conservatively) on this, how much is that worth? To me – I would have bought anything to make WinTel go away.?
Jack Arends, of Wikitosh.com, comments on the blog, ?Welcome Winn! Once you get past the hurdle of getting used to doing things the easy way, you will really start to enjoy yourself. It just gets better every day.?
The ?Mad as Hell? series will be published by Schwartau on Mondays and Thursdays for the next several months. ?I want to thank the literally thousands of people who have come forward to voice their support of “Mad As Hell”, Schwartau wrote on the blog. ?This means a great deal to me personally (people actually do care) and I think it is one of the best ways to create an inviting community where mass migration of the Ma and Pa?s can find a secure and functional home.?
