Mark/Space Developing Missing Sync 3 for OS X [Updated]

Palm appears to have once again forgotten the line of Palm-powered PDAs from Sony in their latest release of Palm desktop for Mac OS X. Sony Clié PDAs will not sync with the latest builds of Palm Desktop X for love or money. Too bad, because the Clié is one of the best PDAs around.

Enter Mark/Space Softworks, developer of Missing Sync 2.1, a cool application that allows the Sony PDA to sync under Mac OS 9.

At last week’s Macworld Expo SF 2002 Mark/Space Softworks showed their new iTunes and X native memory stick drivers for the Sony Cliés. These will all be rolled into Missing Sync 3.0 which the company expects to have a firmer release date by PalmSource which runs from 05-08 February 2002 in San Jose. The company is also investigating an iPhoto plug-in – providing that one is possible.

Your readers might be interested to know that one Clié handheld, the N-610c, syncs perfectly with Macs under OS 9.1 and OS X, no Missing Sync software required (just download the free Palm Desktop software from Palm.com). The reason is that this model (and only this model in Sony’s lineup) uses PalmOS 4.0 instead of 4.1. The improvments (such as they are) in 4.1 are minimal, so this PDA is a great choice for Mac users. Hurry, though–it is rumored to be soon discontinued. [reader 1]

I just got a Sony PEG-T415 handheld. As with other Clie handhelds, Sony makes no claims about it HotSync’ing to the Macintosh. I thought I would need to purchase the Missing Sync software. However, HotSync has been working fine for me and for some other Mac owners without any additional software. I am using OS 9.1 and Palm Desktop 2.6.3.

Depending on the Clie model, you may not need the Missing Sync software. MarkSpace does not mention this fact on their Web pages promoting Missing Sync, and they have a no return policy, which is not prominently displayed along the path people would normally take to purchasing the software.
