Missing from the Treo: Instant Messaging Client

verichat.jpgOne of the most surprising software omissions from my new Verizon Treo 650 is an IM client. If there was ever a perfect device to stay connected via IM, it’s the Treo. Shortly after noticing the omissions I embarked upon a hunt to find the best IM client for Palm OS devices. That hunt wasn’t exactly easy because there are literally dozens of IM clients out there.
PDA Apps’ VeriChat is pretty much the ultimate Instant Message client for the Treo 650 smartphone. VeriChat is an always-on, unified IM client for Palm OS that works great with the Treo 650. VeriChat works with a persistent wireless data connection (GPRS, CDMA 1xRTT, or CSD) to give you an always-on IM presence on the Yahoo!, ICQ, MSN and AOL chat networks.

One of the best features is VeriChat’s always-on mode that allows you to stay connected to your IM buddies even when your device is in standby mode. Verichat also works in the background, despite the Treo’s lack of true multitasking, allowing you to be in other applications while chatting. VeriChat also features multi IM support so you can be logged onto Yahoo, ICQ, MSN and AIM/iChat simultaneously. Try that iChat!
The only downside with VeriChat is the pricing model. The basic version costs US$25 and the premium version costs US$40 per year. That’s right VeriChat is licensed on an annual basis. That means that you can’t just buy it once and forget it, you have to subscribe to the application and renew every year. Even so, the breadth and depth of VeriChat make it well worth the price of admission.
If you’ve got a few extra ducats, VeriChat Premium Edition allows you to be signed on to multiple IM accounts of the same type and allows you to access VeriChat Bots. Premium also lets you create Botmarks, custom shortcuts that allow to get instant access to powerful mobile tools like flight, package and eBay tracking. Bravo to PDA Apps for a job well done.
