Having recently sold my iMac G5 I can now say my MacBook Pro has truly become my desktop replacement. That said, I often don’t want to lug the silver slap around town but would still like to surf, email and keep in touch with all my elife. As a Euro user iPhone is an option quite yet but I wanted to try out the mobile platform after many years of owning a simple mobile phone.
Enter the Nokia N95. This unit has been reviewed and out since March 2007 so I thought by now with firmware and software updates I would give it a go. I also need a phone that would work between two European networks from one provider so Vodafone was the carrier of choice in this case.
The N95 was released on 26 September 2006 and features a unique two-way slider. Slide it down to reveal a standard keypad, slide it up to reveal multimedia controls (play, pause, etc.)
The N95 is a Symbian-based smartphone that features integrated GPS, HSDPA, 802.11g WiFi, Bluetooth, 160GB HDD, microSD slot and a 5MP still/video camera with flash, digital zoom and a lens cover. The 2.6-inch QVGA screen and standard 3.5mm audio jack round out this mobile powerhouse. The N95 costs US$750 (€550) and is available unlocked directly from Nokia.
The phone wasn't originally destined for the US but there was such a demand for its full-featured package Nokia sold it unlocked in the U.S. This review is based on the original international version.

Dear Apple, Fix iSync for S60.

You're not imagining it, iSync really is broken for S60 V3 devices.
Badly.
It used to be that iSync would push over a little binary that ran a daemon to negotiate iSync communication between your Mac and your S60 handset, which dutifully listened for iSync connections and did a sync.
Now, this process has been broken from the start, due to completely obliterating speed dials and contact groups on the handset. It also blows away custom ringers on contacts and groups because it completely trashes the database on the handset with each sync.
But it gets worse. Much, much worse.

Nokia's Aeon Concept Phone

Nokia has released images of Aeon, a concept phone that combines two touch-sensitive panels mounted on a fuel-cell power pack.
Each of the panels are capable of being used independently. The touch-screen displays man that all 'buttons' are virtual, so in one situation one panel could operate as the display, the other as the keypad. In another the roles could be reversed. Or each display could serve both functions.
Devices like this are all part of Nokia's vision of 'wearable technology'. Users could wear the lightweight panels as a badge, or connected to a wrist-strap.
Nokia are also keen to establish a new wireless standard. Wibree is basically an upgraded bluetooth which would allow the Aeon to be a 'thin-client', farming out processing and storage tasks to static servers.

Could Apple Solidify GSM in the US?

ThinkSecret reports that the much-rumored-about iPhone from Apple is coming and will be available exclusively through Cingular. If true, it would mean that Apple has decided to take a position on what phone stack it is willing to support and has come out on the side of GSM.
In a lot of ways, the mobile phone landscape in the United States could be considered a case study into how sometimes the free market fails end users. Let me explain: in the late 80s and early 90s, there were two different types of technologies available in the US for mobile phone delivery: CDMA and TDMA. However, due to vendor differences, the market fragmented even further with Sprint PCS (now Sprint Nextel) adopting a different flavor of CDMA than Verizon. Meanwhile, Nextel (now part of Sprint Nextel) adopted a proprietary technology called iDen, which was based on TDMA while T-Mobile and Cingular adopted GSM, a flavor of TDMA that has become the global standard outside of the US.
The bottom line on this whole acronym soup is that most mobile operators in the United States cannot operate on each other's networks because they are using different technologies. This is why foreigners visiting the US generally lament about the poor quality of the mobile experience in this country and why the US is falling behind in the global mobile race. This is also why most American mobile phones don't work abroad.
Because Cingular and T-mobile used the same GSM technology, they agreed to share their networks, allowing their customers to use both networks transparently, in a situation similar to the one one would witness outside of the US. The fact that they use GSM is also why a lot of cool phones make it to their networks before they are available to other providers. Verizon is now hedging its bets by introducing hybrid CDMA/GSM phones under the heading of Global Phone Service. iPhone to be Exclusive to Cingular

Apple and Cingular have signed an agreement that will make the US' largest cell phone provider the exclusive carrier of Apple's forthcoming phone, sources report. Apple's iPhone remains on track for an early 2007 release.
As previously reported, Apple's phone will feature a candy-bar design with a 2.2-inch display and 3 megapixel camera. Robust iTunes and iSync support will also be delivered with the phone.
Apple's exclusive contract with Cingular is said to be good for the first six months, sources report, meaning other providers will be able to sell the phone in the second-half of 2007. Cingular had an exclusive on the Motorola ROKR—the first phone to feature iTunes—when it launched last year.

Palm Treo 750v: A First Look

Palm users expecting a major advance from the Treo 750v are going to be disappointed, at least on the basis of our first look. However, it does represent several firsts for Palm in Europe.
The physical specifications of the Treo 750v are almost exactly the same as those of the Treo 700w, which has been available on US networks for some time. It is a few grammes lighter at 154g, possibly because it doesn't have the much-disliked stubby antenna of previous Treos.
The 240-by-240 resolution TFT screen and the 1.3 megapixel camera are the same as on its US cousin.

REVIEW: iPAQ hw6915

As you can see from the side-by-side comparison of the hw6915 (far right), h6315 (center) and h4355, I'm somewhat of an iPAQ fan and have been for several years. I started with Newtons many years ago and tried a few Palm devices, but always preferred the iPAQ and the MS Mobile OSes. Being primarily a long-time Mac user, I have to admit that Microsoft does a good job as long as they stick to simple OSes. But, I digress.
Simply put, after using this device for a couple of weeks, this is my favorite handheld device I have ever owned or could wish to own and leaves me for want of nothing, but there are some caveats and a warning which I will get to later.
The 240X240 screen took me about a day to get used to, but it is sharp, briliant and bright and any reservations I had about moving from 240X320 are gone. The Intel PXA270 416 MHz CPU isn't the fastest out there, but it is plenty zippy for all my tasks and web pages, large pdf and Word files load in a snap. The backlit keyboard is amazingly bright and the keys feel great.

The Frustrated Traveller: Finding a True "World" Mobile Phone

It used to be quite simple: In order to use a mobile phone in the US and the rest of the world you needed GSM service and a phone with "tri-band" capability: 900MHz and 1800MHz for most of the world and 1900MHz for the US. Then two things happened: First, the two major GSM carriers in the US started using 850MHz in addition to, or instead of, the 1900MHz band.
Second, the so-called "next generation" of GSM services became defined and partially deployed. Known as "3G" (WCDMA and UMTS are phrases often used) this new technology allows faster data rates and services such as video calls. A lot more could be said about 3G, but let's focus on the frequency. In most of the world, 3G is being offered on 2100MHz. The good news is that this includes some places that previously had no GSM service at all, notably Japan. The bad news is that (rumor has it), US carriers will be offering 3G service on 1900MHz instead.

Amazon: Motorola Q for US$75

Although it runs Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone platform and you'll need a copy of The Missing Sync (US$40) to sync it to your Mac, I recently saw a friend's Q and was impressed by the sleek profile (especially when compared to my bulky Treo 650). Anyway, Amazon is selling the Q for US$75 with a 2-year contract. If you're going to pick one up, why not buy if from our Amazon affiliate link though, would ya?
Motorola's QWERTY keyboard equipped Q, formerly known as the RAZRberry in the rumor mills, might not exactly be the "BlackBerry killer" that many predicted, but it is certainly one of the most capable and user friendly smartphones available on the market today.
Based on Microsoft's Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone platform, the Q picks up the best features from Microsoft's more phone oriented Smartphone edition of Windows Mobile while still offering a lot of PDA-like capability and screen real estate on its 65k color, 320x240 pixel display.
In terms of hardware features, the Q's right side 3-way scroll wheel and dedicated back buttons take center stage. These give the Q user fast BlackBerry-like scrolling with the ability to select an item or return to the prior screen - all with the user's thumb. Of course you can still do these same things the traditional way by using the 5-way direction pad and the back button that sits to its right. There's also a dedicated home key as well as the red and green call control keys.

With all the talk about Microsoft's Zune "iPod-killer" device, no one seems to have noticed the upcoming phone/music player hybrid from LG, the VX8500. The phone is being marketed as "Chocolate" and is coming soon exclusively from Verizon Wireless.

Phone? What Phone? Oh, I almost forgot I even had the Samsung T509 in my pocket. This amazing phone is so thin (3.59” x 1.81” x 0.88”) and so light (3.3 ounces) I can’t even feel it in my pocket. This sleek looking phone is only available through T-Mobile. Perfect for the average phone user who does not need too many crazy features, the user interface is simple and easy to understand.
Reading the screen is easy in any light thanks to a beautiful, high-resolution (176 x 220 pixel, 65K TFT Color) screen. Call clarity has been excellent both through the handset, the speakerphone and also through my personal Bluetooth headset. Bluetooth is easy to set up on this phone. I was able to transfer my contacts to the phone in a snap. Pairing up my headset to the phone was also a cinch.

My Treo 650 recently had a meltdown. Someone tried to call me and I couldn't answer the call (buttons didn't work) then it hung on the inbound call screen. After a soft reset it went into a boot loop and needed a hard reset to bring it back. After wiping all my data and apps I decided to selectively re-install just my favorites.

Hard restting your Treo, although disruptive, is actually a good thing - provided you have a good backup. It purges a lot of unused and corrupt files clogging your memory and it forces you to re-evaluates what software that you really need on your device.

The iPod Phone Myth

According to proponents of this myth, Apple's success with the iPod is about to be crushed by an onslaught of music playing cell phones, so Apple needs to desperately come up with an iPod + cell phone combination of their own to remain relevant. They're wrong, here's why.
Why the Myth was Woven
This myth is based in part on "Microsoft is Invincible FUD," which carefully warns consumers that whatever strategy Microsoft choses will be both flawless and undeniable, and that rather than examine options, it's best just to wait around and see what Microsoft eventually delivers, and then make the best of it.
However, Microsoft has repeatedly failed in their ongoing attempts to leverage their Windows monopoly to dominate the digital music and media market. Instead, consumers have chosen to buy iPods, leaving Microsoft's WMA strategy soundly defeated by Apple's device and the QuickTime technologies that power it.
Now Microsoft is trying to spin a new threat to the iPod, and Microsoft's entourage of loyal industry analysts is ready to explain how: the iPod will be buried after an all out assault from mobile phone devices that can also play music. That should happen real soon now, as the sleeping army of devices, already in widespread distribution, activate to take over the music world.
The myth is also tied to "Apple is Inconsequential FUD", which warns users that Apple is just too small to ever matter. When interviewed about Apple, Microsoft executives are quick to dismiss the company. For example, Steve Ballmer said he has no interest in Apple's new Intel Macs, because he preferred to only think about "real PCs," by which he apparently meant machines that can run Windows, but don't have anything more modern than an old legacy BIOS.

EV-DO Cost/Benefit: Treo 700p vs. AirCard

I wanted to let you know about my experience with Verizon EV-DO service.
I've tested and found that you can use the Motorola RAZR V3c (from Verizon) as a tethered USB modem on the MacBook Pro on Verizon's BroadbandAccess (EV-DO) network - but it requires you pay US$59.99/month for "tethered data" option. This is the same price as using the Sierra Wireless AirCard.
The weird thing is that once I turn on that option, my phone no longer pairs as a Bluetooth modem with my Mac, it only works via USB.
In your ZDNet post Verizon Treo 700p EV-DO instructions
you mentioned that "The dial-up working (DUN) package costs an extra US$15 per month." I just wanted to clarify that the US$15 option is only available if you already subscribe to ZVW's US$45/month data plan, so it's really US$60 per month whether you use an AirCard or the Treo 700p's EV-DO.
In a sense, the PC Card modem may be a better deal because for the same monthly price you get a card with a separate account that you can use at same time as a voice call. The only extra cost is initial purchase price of the AirCard.
The only problem is that the AirCard won't work in the MacBook Pro's ExpressCard/34 slot and the Novatel XV620 won't be shipping until July 2006.
Bluetooth was never really supported by Verizon in the first place: previously it would pair via Bluetooth as a modem, but not authenticate.
On my Motorola v710 (on VZW) all I needed was a US$5/month Wireless Web data plan (with 20MB/month) and I could pair the phone with my Mac via Bluetooth as a modem and it would connect to the Internet via Verizon's slower National Access network.
What's your take on Verizon's EV-DO/BroadbandAccess pricing? Do you find it expensive? Are there alternatives?

USB Tethering Solution for the Treo 700p

A PowerPage reader just IM'd me with a nice USB tethering solution for the Treo 700p. It's kind of pricey at US$25, but there's a 14-day trial and it's worked quite well for him during the trial. He tracked the software down because he's been unsuccessful getting Bluetooth to tether.
The software comes with EV-DO scripts for both Verizon and Sprint and according to the reader it "seems to get pretty warm during heavy data transfers. Not MacBook warm though." Transfer rates are all over the place, but he's been able to get better than 1Mb in Chicago.

T-Mobile Releases Sidekick 3 SmartPhone

T-Mobile today announced the Sidekick 3 smartphone and Engadget has a bunch of hands-on photos. I just hope that T-Mo fixed the swiss cheese security protecting their Sidekick Web portal.
As promised, our initial impressions of the new T-Mobile Sidekick 3...First off, the Sidekick 3 is really just an evolution and enhancement of its predecessor (just as the SKII was with the original Sidekick). It's about 20% smaller (it's definitely more pocketable), and finally has Bluetooth, a memory card slot, and a better camera,Just as the Sidekick II was with the original Sidekick, the Sidekick is at heart just an evolution and enhancement of its predecessor. The big improvements? Bluetooth, a memory card slot, a better camera, more memory, a music player, and a trackball. There haven't been any major changes in the UI (mainly a few tweaks here and there), and you may or may not like the new keyboard (we liked it, but you'll just have to try it yourself and see), but the biggest disappointment is the display, which is still a paltry 240 x 160 pixels and still looks sorta washed out to our eyes.

On Tuesday June 6th, the FCC released new juice on the Sidekick 3: the reference guide and owner's manual. More filings are on the FCC's main page. (Note: You must change the extension on the downloaded file from ".cgi" to ".pdf").
Most of the rumors that had been published before this release were confirmed. The new Sidekick 3 will have EDGE connectivity for faster Web browsing. There will be a mini-SD card included (size unknown) which will be used for both storing pictures from the new 1.3 Megapixel camera and for storing MP3s for the new music player.
MP3s will be transferred via USB 1.1 (cable included). You will now be able to use a hands free headset through Bluetooth connectivity. vCard files will also be transmittable through Bluetooth. The new Sidekick is doing away with the scroll wheel that has become so identifiable with the Sidekick. It will now have a trackball in place of the wheel which will give the added function of being able to scroll left and right as well as up and down.
The battery will now be removable. Now you can carry a second battery for backup. A new instant messaging client integrates both AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, and MSN messenger together into one easy to use program. Jump screen backgrounds will also now be customizable.
The new Sidekick 3 promises to be a much improved experience. All we need now is a release date. T-Mobile still remains silent about anything to do with the Sidekick 3. If you call T-Mobile they will say that they have no information. There has been speculation of a July 10th release. Lets hope it's soon!

Nokia E61: Killer Features, Seriously Under-Realised

Don't get me wrong, the Nokia E61 is a fantastic device and easily the best smartphone I've owned to date but some of it's BEST features seem very oddly thought out. For example:
Access Point Groups:
+ This feature is nothing short of revolutionary. The ability to set up a preferred use of networks (wireless at home and the office or 3G when I'm out) Outstanding!
- But at present it is only possible to set this as the default connection method for email & syncing. It SHOULD be possible to use this feature as the default for Web browsing & every other Internet application?
Message Notification:
For an integrated device the notification system is seriously disjointed.
+ The Standby screen (or to everyone else the 'day view'). After much searching through menu's I found the option to turn on message display in the Standby screen. Lovely.
- Why is it only possible to have the day view show txts OR emails? And why when you select one of these, does it display the top two messages. This is worse than useless.... despite the glaring fact you may not want the first line of your private messages clearly displayed on the front of your phone.
It SHOULD show only unread messages: Txts AND emails & only the senders name.
The LED:
+ Potentially a fantastic feature.
- But again for an integrated phone, it will ONLY work for emails.
It SHOULD work for all unread messages. Txts & emails.
Multimedia:
+ Despite being marketed as a business phone it is a powerful multimedia device too.
- What is the point of including mp3 & video software with a mono ear piece?
Nokia SHOULD at least have supplied the short Popport to 3.5mm headphone jack that is available all over eBay. Heck if they didn't want to put it in the box, they could at least offer it as an accessory on their online store.
Love the phone but really hoping that a firmware update will resolve some of the above.

Treo 700p Announced, Mac Users Rejoice

As a Mac owner I was a little nonplussed when palmOne announced the Treo 700w four months ago. Gone was one of the best reasons to buy a Treo - native syncing with Mac OS X. Well fear not Mac faithful, palmOne today announced the Treo 700p smartphone (the "p" means that it runs the Palm OS.) The Treo 700p features:
- EVDO
- 312MHz Xscale CPU
- 128MB flash memory (60MB usable)
- 1.3 megapixel camera
- Bluetooth
- SDIO
- 320x320 display
PhoneScoop took a bit of the wind out of my sails though, apparently the 700p's SDIO slot won't support WiFi (um, WHAT?!) and it doesn't support voice dialing over Bluetooth.
The good news is that the 700p appears to have the Bluetooth profile for Dial Up Networking (DUN) enabled. Hopefully Verizon and Sprint won't cripple this feature like they did in the Treo 650.
No word yet on the price of the phone or data plans, but I'll be posting more information as we get it from the carriers.

Sony Corp. on Tuesday announced a symbolic concession to Apple Computer Corp. on digital audio technology. The company will make its latest music management software compatible with the AAC data compression technology used by Apple. The change will enable users of some types of Walkman digital audio players to listen to music imported from Apple's music management software.Sony long clung to its proprietary data compression technology, known as ATRAC. It has since turned to an open-door policy, embracing such popular formats as MP3 and Microsoft Corp.'s WMA. Still, the electronics manufacturer's acceptance of Apple's AAC format, used for the immensely popular iPod digital music players, marks a particular about-face.
Sony said the coming version of its music management software Sonic Stage will be compatible with AAC. The company will provide the software, called Sonic Stage CP, free of charge through the Internet from May 25. The software is compatible with hard-disk types of Walkman A series products.
Sony's latest strategy is an open acknowledgment that it can no longer ignore iPod's dominance. In April, Apple controlled 52 percent of the nation's portable digital music player market, in terms of units sold, according to market researcher BCN Inc. Sony is a distant second with a 15 percent share, followed by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., with a 7 percent share.

Christopher and Greg DeSantis have produced an excellent video for a concept Apple phone/PDA.
The phone looks great, and the video has high production values. If/when Apple produce a phone/PDA, I hope it isn't a million miles away from this. Check out the video on my blog. (Thanks to Conrad for bringing this to my attention.)

T-Mobile Sidekick 3 One Step Closer to Reality

The much anticipated T-Mobile Sidekick 3 just got one step closer to being released. Pictures of the new device were released on the FCC website this week even though Sharp, manufacturer of the Sidekick, requested they be kept confidential. The Sidekick has drawn an ever growing fan club since it 1st debuted with the black and white Sidekick. It's become a cult like following with rumor Web sites and leaked pictures flying across the net.
I myself have submitted to this cult following. I am addicted to my Sidekick II. I started out with a color Sidekick 1 and when the 2 came out I immediately jumped on it. You may ask whats so great about the Sidekick? What does it have that say the Treo or other smart phones don't have?

Hey PowerPage:Have you heard when the Sony Ericsson K790a Cyber-Shot mobile phone will be available in the United States and which carriers will have it?
It seems like a worthy, EDGE-compatible successor to the T6XX line. If you can get a review unit, I'd like your opinion.
