Uncharacteristically for the folks from Cupertino, Apple seems anxious to fuel rumors around Monday’s keynote rather than quell them, with phrases on its homepage like: “This is Big. Even by our standards.” and “Beyond the rumor site. Way beyond.” (We’re still waiting for “Even the Go2Mac staff will be blown away.”)

Go2Mac readers are responding: many of you believe that the new iMac will sport a detachable pen-based LCD screen, or that Apple will introduce a pen-based PDA, or both. Reader Ed goes with the “webpad” net appliance theory, noting Apple’s stake in Samsung and the Mac-like IZZI in the current issue of Pen Computing: the new iMac will be a hybrid of the Mac and the IZZI. Deadesq points out that Apple’s patent filing for an “electromagnetic pen digitizer” was filed in April 2001 — a little recent to be a holdover from the decade-old Newton. Apple Turns, for their part, observe that Bill Gates will be demonstrating a pen-based wireless detachable screen on Tuesday, offering a possible explanation for Steve’s switcheroo to Monday, if he will be demonstrating a similar device.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing iWalk hoax saga, Spymac says Apple legal forced it to remove iWalk imagery and footage and (again) defends those materials as real.

Keeping in mind this is the same Apple that hyped iCards as revolutionary at a Macworld keynote, my own personal prediction is for a Segue-like personal transportation device. (For the most realistic picture of what this would look like, check out the latest Joy of Tech from Nitrozac and Snaggy.)
