Because speech recognition uses the sound input driver continuously, your Mac won’t go to sleep.
iBook: Improper Wake From Sleep When Booted From CD
All that Apple says on this issue is:
If you start up from CD and then put the iBook to sleep (or let it go to sleep by itself), it will not come out of sleep properly. Instead, the hard drive spins up but the screen remains black. At this point you can press Command-Control-Power or press the reset button to recover.
