The New York Post waxes eloquent about New York’s “iPod scene” and iPod DJs and parties. You’ll have to suffer through some minor accuracy flaws, but hey, this is the New York Post. The post writes “The power to cram a jukebox worth of tunes into your shirt pocket is revolutionizing the New York social scene.”
We’re still holding out for a trademark New York Post front page headline featuring the iPod, but it’s probably only a matter of time.
The obsession over the iPod replacing the turntable seems, however, gimicky and seriously premature. For party mixes, going from cassette to iPod is a no brainer. But serious DJ scratchers are more likely to replace turntables with PowerBooks — and even then, many who do are interested in developing a new digital sound with a different language than traditional vinyl scratchers. There’s nothing quite like vinyl DJs, and at the same time there are new sound possibilities with laptops that are wildly unlike what was possible before.
But stay tuned for the Summer of Music here at the PowerPage for some details on what New York’s iPod parties (and PowerBook music making sessions) are like, as we gear up towards Macworld New Yo — er, “Create.”
