Adobe to Pass on MWSF Booth, Still Offer Training Sessions December 3, 2008 8:30 AM Chris Barylick

Software giant Adobe recently announced that the company will not have a booth on the show floor for the upcoming Macworld Expo 2009 event in San Francisco.
According to Macworld, the company has decided to shift its expo resource base to demonstration and education sessions wherein company representatives will be available for a full day of demos about midway through the week of presentations.
The move stands in sharp contrast to Adobe's previous presence at Macworld Expo, wherein the company would launch products or work to advertise its range of software.
"We look forward to hosting Adobe and hundreds of Adobe customers in our education sessions," said Paul Kent, IDG World Expo vice president. “And we’re pleased to be able to present a full day of CS4 demos.”
The company has yet to provide an in-depth explanation as to its strategy change, but did offer the following quote to indicate that its scaled-down expo presence did not hint at a shift away from the Mac: “The Mac community is very important to us and we will continue our strong support for this platform."

Apple Patent Explores Idea of Liquid-Cooled MacBooks December 3, 2008 8:06 AM Chris Barylick

This may be a bit down the road, but it could be spiffy.
According to AppleInsider, a 12-page patent request originally filed in May of 2007 was published for the first time last week. In the patent, Apple notes the the computational performance of electronic devices over the past few years has made it harder to maintain acceptable internal and external operational temperatures in those devices.
"Portable devices, such as laptop computers, cellular telephones, and personal digital assistants have additional design constraints which make it even harder to manage thermal load," the company said.
The company then goes on the point out that size and weight limitations in such devices can make it difficult to achieve desired operational methods, especially in cases where the size and weight of metal heat sinks may be prohibitive and where battery life constraints limit the number of fans that can be included.
Thus, the spiffy idea: liquid cooling.

Apple Removes Antivirus Knowledge Base Article December 3, 2008 8:00 AM Chris Barylick

Following up on yesterday's article regarding Apple's inclusion of a support page on its web site recommending that users purchase antivirus software for their Macs, the company on Tuesday removed the page from its web site.
"We have removed the KnowledgeBase article because it was old and inaccurate," said Apple spokesman Bill Evans. "The Mac is designed with built-in technologies that provide protection against malicious software and security threats right out of the box.”
According to Macworld, the web page seemed to work against Apple's recent marketing campaigns, which tend to imply that Windows PCs require antivirus protection far more than the Mac does.
Albeit the page was removed, Apple still provided some element of a warning against viral activity:
“Since no system can be 100% immune from every threat, running anti-virus software may offer additional protection," said Evans.

Apple Now Taking Orders for In-Ear Headphones December 2, 2008 10:06 AM Chris Barylick
Apple this week began taking orders for its next generation of headphone options designed for iPods. The change took place nearly three months after the design was announced at a September media event.
According to AppleInsider, the Apple online store is now showing the new US$79 Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic as available within 7 - 10 business days while the US$29 Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic currently have a 3-4 week wait and may not ship in time for the holodays.
The premium headphones boast independent woofer and tweeter drivers and allow users to facilitate voice recording without bulky attachments. Unlike previous generation iPods, the models introduced in September -- the fourth-gen iPod nano, second-gen iPod touch, and revised iPod Classic 120GB -- all feature audio input through the fourth connector of the headphone jack like the iPhone.
While the new premium headphones include volume controls (presumably using the same mic signal to adjust volume as the iPhone's mic uses to switch songs or accept incoming calls), they are not listed as compatible with the iPhone because the handset was not designed to adjust volume with the mic switch. Still, the mic should still work and the headphones will work with any iPod or other standard headphone jack device.
If you've heard anything from your end or ordered the headphones already, let us know in the comments or forums.

Joost Makes its Way to iPhone, iPod Touch December 2, 2008 9:50 AM Chris Barylick

Last year, we mentioned Joost and then offered invitations to use the beta, which you guys were apparently fond of.
Since then, the application, which stemmed from the lads behind Skype and Kazaa, morphed into a full web-based service as of 2008.
According to the Apple Core, Joost has apparently beaten the mighty Hulu to the punch and released a free application for the iPhone and iPod touch handsets available via the App Store.
Per Joost's Matt Zelesko in a recent blog post:
…it means another way to view our ever-expanding library of content on Joost. The first version of the iPhone application provides access to our full content library via Wi-Fi. You can browse, search, or simply enjoy some of our most popular programs. Personally, I’ve found it to be a great way to enjoy our extensive music video library and settle some of those “who did that song?” bets at the same time.
The Joost library has been cited as containing 46,000 videos, complete with 400 TV series, 1,200 movies and short films and 18,000 music videos.
Stay tuned for further details as they become available and if you've had a chance to download Joost from the App Store and muck about with it, please let us know what you think over in the comments or forums.

Recent Apple Knowledge Base Article Advocates Use of Anti-Viral Utilities Under Mac OS X December 2, 2008 8:12 AM Chris Barylick

In a recent update to its Knowledge Base web library, Apple has published that it wanted to "encourage" users to use anti-viral utilities to stay safe online.
The Knowledge Base article, which recommends that users install one or more of three anti-virus products (McAfee VirusScan, Symantec Norton Anti-Virus 11 and Intego VirusBarrier X5), runs counter to years of the company's marketing of its operating systems as essentially impervious to viruses.
Over the years, a handful of viruses have been written that targets Mac's OSX, but most have been demonstration versions only and few have had any significant impact on Apple users.
According to BBC News, one virus, known as AppleScript.THT, could take control of a Mac and grab screenshots or keystrokes.
The new concern may not be viral activity itself but the presence of techniques in which criminals attempt to infiltrate popular webpages in a bid to infect the machine of every visitor while working to steal information such as login names, passwords or other sensitive data.

Apple Begins Licensing Mini DisplayPort for Free December 1, 2008 3:45 PM Chris Barylick

If you like the Mini DisplayPort on your recently released late 2008 MacBook, MacBook Air or MacBook Pro notebook, there may be more en route.
According to Ars Tecnica, Apple is looking to expand the new port's popularity by licensing it for free to companies that want to support it.
Developed to replace the Digital Visual Interface and, eventually, the analog VGA interface generally found on personal computers, DisplayPort offers greater bandwidth, supports the VESA DisplayPort protocol and uses a fraction of the space, thereby making it ideal for the refreshed Apple notebooks.

VMWare Offering "Cyber Monday" Deal December 1, 2008 10:00 AM Chris Barylick

The savings don't stop just because the turkey day leftovers are vanishing quickly...
Virtualization software company VMware has announced that the company is holding a one-day sale on its Fusion 2.0 package for the Mac. The software, which ordinarily retails for US$79.99, has been cut in half to US$39.99 while existing users for rival virtualization package Parallels Desktop are being enticed with an additional offer that brings the price of Fusion 2.0 down to only $10.00.
Assorted retailers participating in this offer include Amazon.com and MacMall, which has yet to update its prices to accommodate the one day offer.
Users looking to cash in on the US$10.00 switchover cost to migrate from Parallels to VMware can use an additional US$30 rebate the knocks the cost of Fusion 2.0 down to a mere US$10.00. To cash in on this deal, users can purchase Fusion 2.0 from VMWare's website using coupon code "CyberMondayDeal" and then submit your $30 rebate request on line. You must have proof of ownership of Parallels software to claim the rebate.
The two offers are valid through 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time.
If you've seen a good deal on your end, let us know in the comments or forums.

iTunes 8.0.2 Purchase Bug Located, Workaround Discovered December 1, 2008 8:30 AM Chris Barylick

Even though iTunes updates are usually worth snagging, nothing's ever perfect.
According to MacFixIt, a number of users have reported an issue in which no songs or movies can be purchased in the iTunes Store upon installing iTunes 8.0.2. The problem seems to persist whether users are buying via stored credit or using charge cards on the fly.
The issue, as described by poster "Bryce Lim" on the Apple Discussions board:
"After updating to 8.0.2, I can't purchase anything on iTunes account. Every time I try to purchase music, a TV show or an application I get the error message that '...due to a problem with the iTunes store I have no available store credit for purchasing...' 'I don't have any store credit, I've been trying to purchase with my credit card like I always have been.'"
For many users affected by this problem, credit on the accounts seems to disappear and then reappear at seemingly random times. Luckily it seems the amount of credit is still there, just inaccessible for a while. Additionally, users with gift cards are having problems redeeming them.
Users concerned with the status of their credit are encouraged to contact Apple support via this link or call 1-800-MY-APPLE. In the meantime, users can also try logging out and logging back into their iTunes accounts to work to resolve the issue.
The current fix is as follows:
Reset iTunes' account login It appears that this problem might be with how iTunes is logging into the iTunes store, and as such users have had success by resetting their logins to the store. To do this, from within iTunes sign out of the store account, and then quit the program. Relaunch iTunes and sign back in, then try the account again.
If you've seen this issue on your end or discovered your own workaround to use, please let us know in the comments or forums.
