NoBeige Extra: IBM to Produce G4s, Apple to Reduce MHz by 50

Apple late today said that IBM would start to produce G4 chips early in the year 2000, and the already-announced new desktop G4 systems would be reduced by 50 MHz across the board while retaining the same three price points, due to the current shortage of G4 processors from Motorola, according to the CNET.com News article “Apple thumps expectations, announces IBM chip deal.”

There has been speculation that AMD would step in to fill the production shortage of G4 processors, but now it seems that IBM will return to the fold.

Also, Apple says that they expect to fill most of their iBook backorders by November, but the consumer portables will still be in short supply throughout the next three months.
