I just received my Sonnet Crescendo/WS in the mail today. It is a 500 MHz CPU upgrade for Wallstreet PowerBooks (which have 233 to 300 MHz originally).

I installed mine into a 300 MHz model: Before installing the new CPU, which is as easy as swapping a memory card, one needs to run a application from the supplied CD. This apparently prepares the upgrade (performs a ROM copy, perhaps?) but does not appear to add any new extensions to the System software as far as Conflict Catcher can tell. I also own a 500 MHz iBook Dual USB and I did some speed comparisons, which turned out to be very surprising.

OS X’s Mail application uses IMAP to retrieve Mac.com e-mail, which means mail messages are left on the server even AFTER you press delete for up to one month. This means that, without any warning, exceeding the 5 meg allotment on mac.com’s server will thwart any incoming e-mail. Fortunately, Apple has posted instructions for remedying the problem.

Even though I have some hearing loss my hearing is good enough to pass the flight training medical exam earlier this year.

I wanted to get an aviation headset that gave me the best chance of hearing radio calls clearly. I heard there was a BOSE noise cancelling headset available. In Australia finding the Aviation Headset X was difficult – even harder to part with US$995 for it.

Apple should take a new strategy. The four product computer matrix is a good basic structure, but there is logical room for a subdivision of one quadrant of that matrix and that is the focus of my idea. In short, a two part iMac strategy.
