The iPad could become even more thinner and powerful this year.

Per Boy Genius Report and Digitimes‘ discussions with supply chain sources, touch panel makers TPK and GIS have received iPad Air 2 orders from Apple for “full-lamination” units. The upcoming tablet is expected to have the same 9.7-inch size and screen resolution, but the device is supposed to be thinner than the previous iPad Air model, and pack an “enhanced processor” – likely the A8 chip that will be found inside the upcoming iPhone 6 models – as well as a Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Sometimes it’s the patent filings that really tell you what’s coming down the road.

Per BusinessInsider, a newly public patent application from Apple describes a detailed backend architecture for a mobile wallet designed to hold digital credit, debit cards and coupons issued by a range of merchants and financial institutions.

The filing describes the system as capable of powering mobile transactions conducted via QR codes, the cloud, and contactless NFC (near field communication). It’s also explicitly engineered to handle large bursts of traffic, “such as can occur on a so-called ‘launch day’ of a client device.”

The patent application describes an “omni-wallet,” which allows other parties to securely send data to Apple device owners, using sophisticated encryption and secure hardware to prevent fraudsters from intercepting or duplicating sensitive information such as digital credit cards.

Even if only a fraction of the rumors about the upcoming Apple products are true, this one’s straight from the horse’s mouth.

Apple has announced that it will be holding a press event on September 9, kicking off at 10 a.m. Pacific/1 p.m. Eastern. Invitations dispatched to press on Thursday morning were even more cryptic than usual, with a white-on-white Apple logo, the date, and a message reading “Wish we could say more.”

The event takes places at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, an unusual venue for the company, which either tends to use its own campus’s Town Hall or the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco.

The first set of images show SIM card trays and home buttons in a range of three different colors, which may indicate that the iPhone 6 will keep the same space grey, gold, and silver options from the iPhone 5s. This is in line with a previous leaks, including one from last month which also showed SIM trays in three different colors. The SIM trays shown in the photos also appear to be slightly curved, and was likely designed with the iPhone 6′s thinner, rounded chassis in mind.

In spite of the rumors of delays, Apple’s “iWatch” may be introduced to the public sooner than expected.

Per AppleInsider and the well-connected John Paczkowski of Re/code, who referred to the device as a “new wearable” that will be worn on the user’s wrist. He also reaffirmed claims that the device will tap into the new HealthKit and HomeKit functions of Apple’s forthcoming iOS 8 mobile operating system update.

Paczkowski had previously reported in June that the “iWatch” event would be held in October, but said on Wednesday that plans appear to have changed recently. He still expects that the company will hold an October event, presumably to introduce its fall lineup of iPads.
