Piles are a rumored new feature in the upcoming Mac OS 10.3 (Panther) that are kind of like super spring-loaded folders, without the folder.

Advantages include: you can tell what’s in a Pile just by looking at it, and have easy one-click access to all the files contained in it. Piles can be various sizes, and you can see at a glance how big one Pile is compared to another.

I’ve developed a small interactive Flash program to demonstrate how Piles *might* be implemented (Flash 6 required). Click on it!
