Somehow, this is all Chris' fault.

Chris Barylick

3giphone.jpg

With Apple's long-anticipated release of its iPhone OS 2.2 firmware update for its iPhone and iPod touch handsets, there's a fair amount to process, especially with regard to the changes and new features.

That being said, we'd like to know what you, for better or for worse, make of the updates:

What do You Make of the iPhone OS 2.2 Update?
The update resolved all my problems.
The update resolved some of my problems.
The update resolved none of my problems.
The new features are everything I was looking for.
The new features are good, but there's stuff still missing.
I can't really use any of the new features.
You'll find me outside 1 Infinite Loop later today holding a flaming pitchfork and demanding a refund.
And I still want my free pony, Apple!

Chris Barylick

3giphone.jpg

The iPhone OS 2.1 firmware update is out, available through iTunes 8 and a number of people I know are downloading and installing it as we speak.

That being said, how's it working out for you? Are things better or worse and did Apple include the changes you wanted to see?

How is the iPhone OS 2.1 Working Out?
The update resolved all my problems.
The update resolved some of my problems.
The update resolved none of my problems.
The update solved some problems and created news ones as well.
I haven't had enough time to test it out to really say.
The update is a cruel, cruel joke.
If anyone mentions a group of irate users waving torches and pitchforks outside 1 Infinite Loop...I'm their leader.
I want a pony for my birthday. A pony would definitely boost my productivity.

Poll: How's the 10.5.3 Update Working for You?
30 May 2008 02:45 EST
Chris Barylick

fruitlogo1.jpg

On Thursday, Apple released the long-awaited Mac OS X 10.5.3 update. The update, which weighed in as a 190 to 500+ megabyte download in some cases, contained an assortment of fixes, many of which had been clamored for by Mac OS X 10.5.2 uses.

Here on the PowerPage, 10.5.3 has been installed and nothing's melted down yet.

At least for now.

And so the question falls to you; what's gone right, what's gone wrong and how is one of the largest updates in Apple's history working out for you after the first 24 hours since its release?

How's the Mac OS X 10.5.3 Update Working for You?
The update resolved all my problems.
The update resolved some of my problems.
The update resolved none of my problems.
The update solved some problems and created news ones as well.

Poll: Has the Aluminum iMac Screen Freeze Bug Been Resolved?
10 December 2007 08:27 EST
Chris Barylick

17inchimac.jpg

This moves outside the purview of mobile technologies a little bit, but it's important: Since its release, the aluminum iMac has received both positive feedback as well as become synonymous with a intermittently-occurring screen freeze bug. The problem has surfaced under both the Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 operating systems and spawned a wide number of theories as to the underlying problem, including driver software and the ATI graphics cards used in the machines themselves.

Apple, in return, has issued a number of firmware updates designed to resolve the problem.

Our question to you is this: have these updates worked and, if so, how effectively?

Here's the poll and if you have anything else to add, let us know in the comments or forums:

Did the Apple Firmware Updates Resolve the Freezing Bug On Your iMac?
Yes - The bug hasn't resurfaced since I installed the updates.
No - The bug's still there.
Not sure - The fix seemed to work at first, but the problem's resurfaced.
I never experienced the problem in the first place.
I had to have the iMac physically repaired to resolve the problem.

Poll: iPod Game Incompatibility - What Do You Think?
21 September 2007 01:48 EST
Chris Barylick

fruitlogo1.jpg

When Apple's most recent generation of iPods came out on the market less than two weeks ago, buyers came home, as usual, to unwrap the coolest digital media devices on the market.

Unfortunately, many found that after transferring their iTunes content to the devices, games compatible with the third to fifth generation of the iPod were now incompatible with the sixth generation of the device as well as the current iPod nano. Apple's current suggestion has been for users to repurchase the games at US$4.99 each from the iTunes Store, an idea which has brought about its own firestorm of reactions.

We here at O'Grady's PowerPage wanted to know what you have to say about this:

Poll: iPod Game Incompatibility - What Do You Think?
Apple should offer previously-purchased games at a discount for users who've purchased a new iPod.
Apple should have offered a free updater program to make the games compatible.
Considering the system changes in the new iPods, Apple wasn't obligated to ensure compatibility for the new iPod generation.
I'm returning my iPod over this.
Apple should at least provide a discount for previous iPod game owners in this situation.
If you need to find me, I'll be catapulting confused bovines at Apple headquarters out in Cupertino.

Poll: Regarding the "iPology"
07 September 2007 02:44 EST
Chris Barylick

iphone3.jpg

Throughout the week, Apple announced a US$200 rebate on its iPhone handset, a rebate which wasn't retroactive to users that had purchased the iPhone more than 14 days ago.

The user base had less than favorable things to say about this and in an open letter, Apple CEO Steve Jobs offered both an apology as well as a forthcoming US$100 rebate to its entire iPhone customer base.

Given that the worst of this seems to be over, we want to know what you think about the situation:

What do you make of Apple's $100 rebate concession to its iPhone customer base?
It was enough and I'm satisfied.
I want the full $200 rebate, even after the return period.
Considering the situation, I got more than I expected.
I'm getting less of a rebate than I expected.
I'm returning my iPhone because of this mess.
I want to see how the rebate will be offered before I make any decisions.
All the cool kids are standing outside of Apple headquarters angrily waving pitchforks - it's about time I joined them.

The update took care of some of my problems.

Poll: What Do You Make of the Mac OS X 10.5 Delay?
13 April 2007 01:35 EST
Chris Barylick

fruitlogo1.jpg

On Thursday, Apple announced that its upcoming Mac OS X 10.5 operating system would be delayed until October as a result of the need to finish final work on the company's long-awaited iPhone. The news came as a disappointment to some who felt that the company should have been able to wrap up both projects at the same time. Let us know what you think and if this significantly changes anything for you:

How has the Mac OS X 10.5 delay affected you?
I'm irritated at Apple.
They should be able to complete the iPhone and Mac OS X 10.5 in time for June.
I'll get by with Mac OS X 10.4 for the time being.
I'm glad they're taking their time with development.
I'll look for third party solutions to provide what I was looking for with Mac OS X 10.5.
I'm looking into a Windows-based PC as a result of this.
I'm having 20,000 pizzas sent to Steve Jobs' house.

Poll: Would Removing DRM Change Your Music Buying Habits
12 February 2007 09:41 EST
Chris Barylick

greenituneslogo.jpg

Amidst the chaos of Steve Jobs' open letter regarding digital rights management software in the online music world and the ensuing fallout from both sides of the issue, we wanted to know what you make of of the question at hand. Does digital rights management genuinely change the way you buy music online and what would you like to see changed?

Would removing DRM protection from music purchased online change your buying habits?
Yes, I'd buy more music online.
I'd definitely buy less music online.
I don't mind DRMs, but I want them to be open standards.
I don't usually buy music online.
I'll buy the music if it's there, DRM aside.

Given the hype, attention and overall speculation regarding Apple's iPhone, we thought it was time to put the question to our readers: do you plan to buy this thing when it's released?

Will You Buy an iPhone?
I'll be camping outside the Apple Store to get one.
I want to wait a few weeks to see how it goes.
I want to wait a few months.
I'll only buy one if they open it up to my carrier.
It needs to be able to run third party applications before I buy one.
I'm happy with the phone I have now.

With Intel's next generation of processors on the horizon for the second half of this year, we ask whether this changes your plans towards buying an additional Mac or an upgraded unit:

Has the introduction of Intel's 45 nanometer "Penryn" chips, due later this year, made you reconsider getting a Mac or delaying your purcase?
Definitely.
No, I still plan to buy a Mac soon.
I'm going to wait a few weeks/months and see.
I'm going with an AMD-based PC given the new information.
