It won’t work you have to carry a separate clump of wires! The brick winds both ways easily — one small convenient package to carry, nothing to get separated and possibly lost. Now, I just touched the old brick and it is cool as a cucumber. In fact I have been touching it a lot ever since Apple announced the problem and it has remained no hotter than room temperature in well over two months.
The yo-yo on the other hand … well it puts out a nice warm glow whether my PowerBook is plugged in and charging or not. So, what gives? The last thing I wanted was another yo-yo, particularly for travel, though I think it looks quite nice on the desktop. But now I have one and I’m sure Apple is anxiously waiting to charge my credit card if they don’t get the old adapter back in short order.
Is this some effort on the part of Steve Jobs to rid the Mac world of computers and accessories that don’t live up to his sense of style or is he simply honoring his backroom deals with third party vendors to make the Mac’s accessories so impracticable (however attractive) as to bolster the demand for third party accessories and keep those manufacturers in business?
And just what will happen if I keep using the old adapter? Will it spontaneously combust while visiting my grandmother and set her lace curtains ablaze? I suppose I will just have to accept my fate, swap the adapters and justify the extra expense to finally buy that Madsonline brick I’ve been eyeing!
[Ed: just for the record, I HIGHLY recommend returning your defective PowerBook AC adapter promptly. Why tempt fate when your safety could be at risk? On the design point, I highly agree that the Yo-Yo adapter is too large for any self-respecting mobile technologist. One solution is to purchase a PackAge 45w from ID East End in Japan, the other is to pick up the cool silver Micro AC Adapter US$88 from Madsonline.]
