Possible Solutions to HP Portable Printer Incompatibility

Update: Many readers have commented about this story, letting us know that InfoWave’s PowerPrint seems to handle the problems associated with the DeskJet 340 flawlessly.

One reader brought to our attention that the HP DeskJet 340 printer is not compatible with the PowerBook G3 Series (connected via serial cable). It is believed that the G3 Series communicates too quickly with the printer, and some data is consequently lost.

We called the Tech Support line at Hewlett-Packard to see what was up. They confirmed that there is a “known issue that is under investigation” concerning PowerBooks and the DeskJet 340. However, the operator at HP was able to offer two possible work arounds to the incompatibility problem.

  1. Activate AppleTalk.
  2. Set the Control Panel to channel AppleTalk to the infrared port.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Use Command-Option-Control while opening the Chooser to reset the Chooser cache.

Another option is to remove all Open Transport extensions.
