PowerBook Luggage: Chrome Industries Rocks

chrome blackbox It should come as no surprise that your editor has nothing less than an insane fetish for luggage. Good PowerBook luggage that is. You see, a PowerBook bag is more than a simple bag, it is one that gets a lot of use, especially if you tote your PowerBook to work, school, etc. PowerBook bags quickly become an intricate part of your computing experience and that is why the darned things become so easy to get attached to.

Even more than that, PowerBook luggage must also strike a balance between being functional (the primary need) and just plain looking good. PB luggage says a lot about the person carrying it, making it an even more important decision to get right.

Back in November PowerPage reader Jesse turned me on to Chrome Industries, (“Chrome’s a top of the line bike messenger bag company. Their stuff is bombproof.”) Chrome makes messenger, DJ and laptop bags and I was immediately impressed with their wares. Their Vagrant [US$66] line of bags is classified as a messenger bag but yet manages to fit a PowerBook G4 Titanium in the US$15 laptop sleeve. Colors include red, navy, black and green.

The bag I was drawn to was the Blackbox [US$100, above] a super cool squarish black bag with molded foam padding on all sides. The Blackbox looks like it would be just as comfortable carrying your records across Tribeca to a late-night gig at Vinyl as it does schlepping your TiBook to a client meeting in Philly. This thing rocks. It fits your TiBook – effectively locking it in a padded cell.

The semi-rigid construction offers maximum protection from crushing and impact. On the inside you get additional protection from a removable padded laptop sleeve. Equipped with a super comfortable shock absorbing neoprene shoulder strap with industrial strength snaphook hardware. Features a front panel flip down organizer with pockets for Zip Drive, disks, cords, and CD’s.

What’s more, the Blackbox bag doubles as a fantastic wine carry-on bag for those that like to travel with their own beverages. The blackbox served us well on our recent snowboarding trip to Salt Lake City, it managed to hold two bottles of wine and other foodstuffs for the trip without anything breaking. It even held up through the numerous security checks and searches that were prevalent at the Olympics.
