PowerBook SuperDrive Fits Earlier Models

Think Secret is reporting that the SuperDrive unit from the new 1 GHz PowerBook works in some earlier PowerBook models. According to technicians, the DVD-R SuperDrive — available only in the top-end ‘Book — has the same form factor and cable connection as the Combo drive. One contact confirmed this, installing a SuperDrive into 667 MHz and 800 MH PowerBook models: The drive worked fine after the switch. Theoretically, the unit could also be installed in PowerBooks the next generation back. This probably means very little for older PowerBook owners, however. If Apple wanted to institute a SuperDrive upgrade program for owners of earlier models, the company would face no technical barriers. But such a program would be inconsistent with past practices, and, unlike the Combo drive upgrade program, would hurt sales of the new models.
