Reader Report: Security Update Wreaks Havoc on G4s

[Ed’s disclaimer: Reports like this tend to surface with every OS update released. Lesson learned: be sure you have an up-to-date backup of your system before you install even an innocuous looking upgrade, and use System Update with care. -PK]

I just recently updated my system software on my PowerMac G4 400 and my PowerBook G4 400. I’ve spent the entire day reinstalling system software on both machines. The system preferences seem to become extremely corrupted. On my PowerBook G4 400 the Networking preferences became unusable. On my PowerMac G4, my user preferences became unusable – so much so that it would not allow me to install software.

The updates that I installed through the system update panel were: Disc Burner 1.3.5, Security Update 2002-08-20, and Networking Update 1.0. Update at your own risk!
