REVIEW: SmartDisk VST Battery Charger for PBG4

Now that we are only a little more than a week away from The Big Dance in New York City you should be thinking about all the things that you’ll need to pack for a successful Macworld Expo. Right up there on the list with a comfy pair of trade show shoes should be an extra PowerBook battery for the car, train or airplane.

Right up there on the list with a comfy pair of trade show shoes should be an extra PowerBook battery for the car, train or airplane.

An extra battery is mandatory for PowerBook users that travel, and what self-respecting ‘Book owner doesn’t travel? The problem that I have with my second battery is that it is almost never charged when I hastily grab it and run out the door.

SmartDisk (formerly VST Technology) has solved that problem with their PowerBook Battery Chargericon [US$169.95], the first charger available for PowerBook G4 users.

The device couldn’t be simpler to use: plug the included Apple AC adapter into the wall and then into the charger, drop in a TiBook battery (or two) and that’s it. Batteries take about three hours (each, if you have two) to obtain a complete charge. The charger includes real time LED indicators for charge mode, charge completion, and battery error detection so you are always in the loop about the status of your battery.

VST has been making PowerBook chargers and accessories for a long time and the new PowerBook G4 charger is another example of good product design and worry-free execution. More importantly, I can be sure that my batteries will be fully juiced when I hop the Metroliner to New York City next week!

The VST PBG4 Battery Charger icon for the PowerBook G4 is available for only US$147.95 (plus US$6.02 shipping) from Go2Mac.com sponsor Buy.com – US$22 off list price! Support us by purchasing this item from Buy.com icon.
