speck-activesport-armband-ipod-nano.jpgOne of the things that drives me nuts about Apple is their rabid secrecy when it comes to new products. I understand what their reasons are, and they’re noble, but there are some downsides. Take for example the announcement of the new second generation iPod nano (aluminum), they were available in store immediately but it was impossible to find a case for one.
Granted, the 2g nano is only a hair smaller than the original, but if you read this site even a little bit you’re aware that I have a bit of a bag/case fetish and that I like my iron completely protected from the cruel world – and my clumsy hands. This presents an obvious problem for someone like me, it’s almost impossible to find cases that fit the new nano. Until now.
Speck Products is one of the first companies out of the chute with cases designed specifically for the 2g iPod nano. And boy are they cool…

This week I’ve been working out with the new ActiveSport Armband for iPod nano 2g (US$30) from Speck Products and it’s a quality item. The ActiveSport armband is constructed of breathable white fabric with touches of silver, gray and enough Scotchlite-like reflective material to make sure that oncoming traffic will see you if you’re jogging in the street at night.
The ActiveSport armband fits the original and 2g nano and works with the Nike+ iPod Sports Kit dongle that attaches to the bottom of the iPod. Unlike the Apple armband which leaves the top third of your nano exposed, the ActiveSport armband completely covers the iPod for full protection allowing it to be worn upside-down. I prefer to have my iPod mounted upside down when it’s on my arm because it’s easier to change and rate tracks.
It also blows away the Nike+ Sport armband which I returned because it completely covers the screen (hello?) and feels like little more than a thin piece of fabric.
The ActiveSport fits pythons from 12-18 inches in diameter and I don’t recommended that you wear it when working out your biceps, it’s just a little too constricting. If you own the Nike+ iPod Sports Kit, the ActiveSport armband also comes with a velcro shoelace attachment for the transciever.
Speck also makes a whole line of ActiveSport armbands for full size iPods too.
UPDATE: The price was corrected to US$30, the ActiveSport armband for the original iPod nano costs US$15.
