Rumor: Leaked iPhone 7 camera component could feature optical image stabilization across entire line

There’s a bit of truth to every leak and rumor.

A new leaked image published late Thursday shows what’s purported to to be a redesigned rear camera module for the “iPhone 7,” widely expected to ship in mid- to late September.

The module most notably features an L-shaped flex cable, which is different from the camera cables used for the iPhone 6, 6 Plus and their Plus variants. It otherwise bears similarities to the cameras in the 6 Plus and 6s Plus, however, which may back rumors that all models of the “iPhone 7” will support optical image stabilization.

The optical stabilization feature, which was previously reserved for the Plus models, seems to be present across the whole iPhone 7 line. This feature can significantly reduce motion blur, rendering clearer shots in action scenes and low lighting, but also requires a slightly bigger camera module, built to accomodate the motion compensation mechanism.

The recent iPhone 7 camera leaks have shown a larger bump at the rear of the handset, which has indicated at some form of an improved camera. The “7 Plus” should actually have a dual-lens camera, though it’s unclear what the second lens will do — while it could offer telephoto functions, it might also simply aid image quality.

The next-gen iPhone is expected to be released next month and will feature modest changes, including faster processors and upgraded camera components. They may also have changes like a pressure-sensitive home button, however, and 32 gigabytes of default storage.
