Some Users Reporting Hard Drive Lag with 17″ MacBook Pro Notebook

Over on the Apple Discussion Boards, multiple users are contributing to a thread discussing hard drive lag on Apple’s current 17″ MacBook Pro notebook. According to The Unofficial Apple Weblog, several users report hearing the hard drive park itself, but at inappropriate times, causing the rainbow spinning wheel to appear and bringing all tasks to a halt. This comes a short time after other users have reported a strange beep.

One user reported no red flags while running Activity Monitor while another went so far as to swap the hard drive to no avail. Still another user reportedly fixed the problem by creating a secondnd user account.

If you’ve seen this issue on your end or arrived at your own fix, please let us know in the comments.

I have this on my 17″ MBP 07/09 edition. As with many others who have reported the same thing, I was problem-free for the first 10 days of use, and since then I get the notorious, click, pause, beep effect every 5 minutes of daily use. It is unacceptable.

I just got my 17″ MacBook Pro today with the 7200 rpm drive. I have been using PC's for over 10 years and thought I would give it a try since I loved and owned a mac back in the early days. Was so excited to boot it up and show it off to a couple people at the office. When I got home to start installing software I hit the power button and it won't boot up. Tried several times and it won't go past the screen with the gray apple and spinning wheel. I ran a hardware test and here is the error I got. 4HDD/11/40000004:SATA(0,0) I will be calling Apple tech support in the morning but I am finding so much on the internet about these laptops that I may just return it for a refund and go buy the most powerful Windows laptop I can find. I need it for graphics and web design and was really looking forward to using this laptop.

I'm seeing it as well.. for no apparent reason, the hard drive stops spinning, and the spinning wheel keeps spinnin' round 🙁 I pretty much have to reboot at that point.

I've had the same issue, but it happens so sporadically that I can't reproduce the problem on demand.

Yes, I had this problem, with the 500GB 7200RPM Seagate drive. I would hear a fairly loud click, beep, click, and any process that was reading from or writing to the disk would stall. The stall lasted about a second.

Apple replaced the drive with another of the same model, and the machine has been fine ever since.

Interestingly, the genius at the Apple Store said that they had a tech note from Apple that said that the strange noises are “normal” for this model, but I insisted upon the replacement on the grounds that the hangs of my apps couldn't possibly be normal.
