Syncing with Entourage v.X [Updated]

Updated 09 December with your feedback.

Microsoft Office v.X for Mac OS X has finally shipped, but with an important ommission: there is no conduit available for Entourage X, either for Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X. The missing software is the responsibility of Palm, as a number of readers wrote in to report. The good news is, the software should be available soon, along with Palm Desktop software for X. And get this: if you have an eMate or Newton, you can sync now with Newtourage.

The Office v.X installer points to a Handheld synchronization page on Mactopia, but that page still hasn’t been updated, suggesting users wait for information to appear in the MacTopia newsletter.

A number of readers have confirmed that Palm‘s lack of support for X, not Microsoft’s, is to blame. Reader Paul Thurrott met with both companies at COMDEX, and Microsoft, for their part, says they will provide a free download of the Palm synchronization software once it is available. According to Thurrott and other reports, Palm projects this month for beta software of its Palm Desktop software with a Q1 2002 final release. Reader Jay D. Weiss notes that what Palm is calling “Palm Desktop” is unlikely to resemble the Palm-branded Claris Organizer for OS 9. The desktop software, instead, probably simply involves drivers HotSync support, making an application like Microsoft’s Entourage essential. The conduit architecture will be entirely new.

But forget Palm. If you want to be the first on your block to sync data from a PDA to Entourage v.X, you just need to pick up . . . an Apple eMate or Apple Newton.

Yes, you heard that right. Reader John Del Pizzo points us to his software, available at www.delcannsoftware.com, which currently has contact syncing and will soon have date syncing as well. Here’s an amazing confluence of technology that adds up to a state of technological nirvana that can only be called, well, as John has named his software, Newtourage: MessagePad 120/2.0,
