Google Earth 5.0.11729.1014 Released

Late Tuesday, software giant Google released version 5.0.11729.1014 of its popular Google Earth program. The new version, a 27 megabyte download, adds the following new features:

  • Historical imagery from around the globe.
  • Ocean floor and surface data from marine experts.
  • Simplified touring with audio and voice recording.
  • The new version requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run.

    VirtualBox, an open source x86 virtualization project available for free has just hit version 2.2.2. The new version, a 57.9 megabyte download, sports the following fixes and changes:

  • Host and guest clipboard: fixed a number of issues affecting hosts and guests running the X window system.
  • Guest Additions: make sure the virtual mouse autodetection works on first reboot after installing the Additions on X.Org server 1.5 and later.
  • Guest Additions: properly report process identity number of running services.
  • Guest Additions: clean up properly if the X Window server terminates.
  • Linux Additions: fixed installation path for OpenGL libraries in some 64-bit guests (bug #3693).
  • Solaris Additions: fixed installation to work when X.Org is not installed on the guest.
  • Solaris Additions: fixed a bug that could panic the guest when unmounting a busy shared folder.
  • Windows Additions: fixed mouse pointer integration of some Windows guests (2.2.0 regression, bug #3734).
  • Windows Additions: fixed installation on Windows Server 2008 Core (bug #2628).
  • Main: do not try to use older versions of D-Bus (Linux hosts only, bug #3732).
  • VMM: fixed out-of-memory conditions on Windows hosts (bug #3657).
  • VMM: fixed occasional hangs when attaching USB devices during VM startup (2.2.0 regression; bugs #3787).
  • VMM: fixed guru meditation related to memory management (software virtualization only).
  • Virtual disks: fix possible data corruption when writing to diff images, incorrect detection of redundant writes.
  • GUI: reworked network settings dialog.
  • GUI: properly show the detailed settings dialog of NAT networks (bug #3702).
  • GUI: HostKey could not be changed (2.2.0 regression, bug #3689).
  • GUI: fixed memory textfield size (Windows hosts only; bug #3679).
  • GUI: fixed crash when selecting a shared folder path (Windows hosts only; bugs #3694, #3751, #3756).
  • VBoxManage modifyhd –compact: implemented again for VDI files, and now supports relative paths (bug #2180, #2833).
  • VBoxManage snapshot discard: made it work again (2.1.0 regression; bug #3714).
  • NAT: on some Windows host, the guest didn’t receive a DHCP lease (bug #3655).
  • NAT: fixed release assertion during poll() (bug #3667).
  • Clipboard: fixed random crahes (X11 hosts only, bug #3723).
  • Shared Folders: fixed incorrect permissions for Solaris guests.
  • Shared Folders: fixed wrong file sizes with Solaris guests.
  • CBindings: fixed possible memory leak while releasing the IVirtualBox and ISession Objects.
  • Solaris hosts: fixed host-only network interface incompatibility with nwam/dhcpagent (bug #3754).
  • Windows installer: fixed several install and uninstall issues (bugs #3659, #3686, #1730, #3711, #3373, #3382, #3701, #3685, #3710).
  • Mac OS X hosts: preliminary support for Snow Leopard.
  • VirtualBox 2.2.2 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later and an Intel-based Mac to install and run.

    Mozilla Releases Firefox 3.0.10 Update

    Garmin Releases WebUpdater 2.0.6

    Over the weekend, GPS accessory company Garmin released version 2.0.6 of its firmware for its family of devices.
    The update, a 4.0 megabyte download (courtesy of VersionTracker), fixes issues with detecting certain Zumo models.
    The update requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run.

    Mozilla Releases Firefox 3.0.9 Update

    Early Wednesday, Mozilla.org released version 3.0.9 of its Firefox web browser.
    The new browser, a 17.3 megabyte download, sports the following fixes and changes:

  • Fixed several security issues.
  • Fixed several stability issues.
  • Many users experienced an issue where a corrupt local database caused Firefox to “lose” its stored cookies. (bug 470578)
  • Fixed an issue where, starting with Firefox 3.0.7, inline image attachments on popular webmail services (like AOL and AIM) would not display. (bug 482659)
  • Large forms would sometimes take a long time to submit. (bug 426991)
  • In certain cases, new windows would not have proper focus. (bug 446568)
  • The program requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run.

    DivX for Mac 7.0 Out the Door

    DivX for Mac, the shareware player that allows users to view high definition H.264 (.mkv) videos with AAC audio and video, hit version 7.0 yesterday. The new version, a 23.2 megabyte download (courtesy of VersionTracker), allows for expanded playback of the .divx and the .avi formats on the Mac.
    The player requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run.

    Drive Genius 2.1.1 Released

    Prosoft Engineering has released Drive Genius 2.1.1, an updated version of its drive repair and recovery program for Mac OS X.
    The new version, a 23.3 megabyte download, offers the following fixes and features:

  • Enhanced Duplicate tool has an option to verify the destination of whole-drive copies. In addition, source bad blocks can be skipped if found during a whole-drive copy.
  • Increased performance and reliability of Defrag.
  • Bug Fix: spurious “test aborted by disk” S.M.A.R.T. warnings in 10.5.x
  • Bug Fix: after shredding a volume, a new volume would always be created as “Untitled” instead of using the previous volume name.
  • Bug Fix: the tooltip displayed for duplicate files in DriveSlim contained an invalid path to the original file when displaying results from the boot volume.
  • Bug Fix: crash during launch if information about installed languages could not be obtained (10.4.x/PPC only).
  • Bug Fix: Adobe and Microsoft application updates would fail if language bundles were removed or their binaries trimmed; these are now excluded from the DriveSlimsearch results.
  • Other bug fixes.
  • Drive Genius retails for US$99 and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later installed to work. The application is a Universal Binary and functions natively under both PowerPC and Intel-based hardware.

    Microsoft Releases Office 2004 11.5.4, Office 2008 12.1.7 Updates

    On Tuesday, Microsoft released updates for both its Office 2004 and Office 2008 suites for the Mac.
    Microsoft Office 2004 version 11.5.4, a 9.7 megabyte download through the AutoUpdate program, offers stability and performance fixes and repairs a vulnerability in which an outside party could insert malicious code.
    The program requires Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later to install and run.
    The company also released Microsoft Office 2008 12.1.7, a 267.7 megabyte download through the AutoUpdate program that offers improvements to enhance security, stability, and performance, including fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code.

    SpamSieve Updated to 2.7.4

    Michael Tsai’s must-have shareware program, SpamSieve, has just been updated to version 2.7.4. The new version, a 5.8 megabyte download, makes the following fixes and improvements:

  • Improved compatibility with pre-release versions of Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
  • SpamSieve is better able to recover from corpus files that were damaged due to disk errors.
  • Improved the Entourage installer’s error handling.
  • Improved the error reporting when saving the corpus.
  • Improved the troubleshooting instructions.
  • Fixed a problem where messages trained as good in Apple Mail could be moved into the inbox of a disabled account.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause harmless error messages to be logged to the Console when playing System 7 sound files.
  • The crash reporter now warns before sending a report without an e-mail address.
  • You can now press Enter to click the Send Report button in the crash reporter.
  • SpamSieve is available for a US$30 registration fee and requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run. The new version can either be downloaded directly from the web site or brought up to the current version via the program’s built-in update feature.

    Late Wednesday night, Roxio released version 10.0.2 of its Toast Titanium authoring software. The new version, available here, adds the following fixes and changes:

  • Resolves crash issue that may occur with some FLAC audio files.
  • Resolves issue when converting QuickTime movies with text tracks.
  • Improved handling of corrupt PCM audio packets.
  • Toast 10 Titanium requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to install and run and retails for US$99.99.
